There are some tips to extend the flowering period of fresh cut flowers.

The Chinese New Year is coming soon, and many flower lovers will buy a few bunches of fresh cut flowers online to decorate the festival. As a disposable consumer product, flower lovers hope that the flowering period of fresh cut flowers can be longer. How can you extend the days of flowers? Take a look.

1. Wake up the flowers

Flowers usually take 1 to 5 days to be delivered, so there will inevitably be some loss and dehydration, so the first step after the flowers arrive home is to restore their vitality, or professionally wake them up.

Prepare a larger bucket and fill it with 1/3 to 2/3 water (depending on the length). Then soak the flowers in the water for 4 hours, with all the branches and leaves below the flower head immersed in water. Let the flowers fully absorb water before taking them out for trimming.

After 4 hours, the flowers will become stretched, upright, elastic, and full of vitality. At this time, you can take out the flowers and trim them.

Most common fresh cut flowers such as roses, chrysanthemums, carnations and gladiolus can be treated in the same way. For some species that require a lot of water, such as hydrangea, the entire branch and flower should be soaked in water for 4 hours.

2. Trimming flowers

Take the flowers out of the water after they have woken up, break off the yellow and damaged petals on the outer layer of the flower head, and remove the leaves soaked in water at the bottom. For example, for roses, only keep 2 to 3 leaves under the flower to prevent the leaves from entering the water, which will deteriorate the water quality and shorten the flowering period.

Cut off 1 to 3 cm from the bottom of the flower stem, with the cut being oblique to increase the water absorption area. For some varieties with high water absorption, the bottom cut can be trimmed in a cross or rice shape to increase the water absorption area.

3. Daily maintenance

①、Water flower arrangement

Tap water contains a certain amount of chlorine, so it needs to be left for 1 to 2 days before use. Generally, the fresh flowers need to be 10 cm higher than the vase, and the vase should be filled with 1/3 to 2/3 of water. This immersion depth is suitable for most cut flowers. However, the stems of grass flowers are soft and easy to absorb water, so the immersion depth can be shallower (about 10 cm). The stems of roses are harder, so the immersion depth can be deeper (20 to 30 cm).

Adding preservatives to water can effectively prolong the flowering period. In addition to special preservatives, you can also prepare simple preservatives yourself. You can add salt and sugar to water to make a 1% salt-sugar mixed aqueous solution.

② Change water and prune branches

In spring, summer and autumn, when the temperature is high, the water can be changed once a day, and in winter when the temperature is low, the water can be changed every 2 days. When changing the water, you should also prune the branches, that is, cut off a small section (1 to 3 cm) at the bottom of the stem to restore the water absorption capacity of the flower branches.

There is one detail to note when pruning branches, that is, it is best to prune branches in water , which is also mentioned in many flower arrangement tutorials. Because pruning branches in the air, air can easily penetrate into the cut, which hinders the branches from absorbing water. The reason for this, the editor analyzed, may be that when pruning branches, the cut is squeezed by the scissors, and the cut will absorb air during the process of deformation recovery, just like the plastic bottle absorbs air during the process of squeezing and recovery.

③. The placement of flowers will also affect the flowering period. Avoid direct sunlight in summer and avoid places with draughts and heaters in winter. As long as the room temperature is above 10 degrees, the lower the temperature, the longer the flowering period. So don't treat fresh cut flowers with the same requirements as potted plants.

Ethylene is a ripening hormone that can shorten the flowering period. Therefore, do not place fruits and vegetables that produce ethylene gas, such as apples, bananas, and pears, in the room where you place fresh cut flowers.

One more thing to add, don't spray water on the flower buds, as it will cause gray mold and rot.

Finally, I wish you may be accompanied by flowers every day during the New Year and may you be in a bright mood every day.
