Summer maintenance for rosewood furniture: experts teach you how to "add a little oil".

The more precious an item, the more proper its care is required. Rosewood furniture, with its beautiful shape, high collectible value, and rich artistic appeal, is beloved by many. While durable, rosewood furniture still requires proper use and maintenance to extend its lifespan. Many pieces of rosewood furniture from the Ming and Qing dynasties have survived to this day thanks to effective maintenance. So, how should rosewood furniture be cared for in the summer?

Here are some tips on how to care for mahogany furniture during the summer.

First, mahogany furniture differs from ordinary furniture. It thrives in humid environments and dislikes dryness. Therefore, mahogany furniture should be placed away from doorways, windows, and drafty areas, and should especially avoid direct sunlight. Avoid having air conditioners blowing directly on the furniture. Additionally, pay attention to air humidity in summer and winter. In summer, when the air is humid, air conditioning is necessary; in winter, when the air is dry, a humidifier is recommended to maintain indoor humidity at a suitable level.

Secondly, the storage of items in mahogany furniture should be moderate. Items stored in cabinets should not exceed the door frame. If items are frequently forced in, it will cause the cabinet doors to warp.

Third, tabletops and chair seats. Take care to prevent bumps and cracks. When using or moving the furniture, lift it instead of dragging it to avoid loosening the overall structure. If you find that the tenons are loose at the joints, be sure to re-glu and seal them before using it.

Fourth, mahogany furniture is generally used for a long time, so the surface coating should be protected regularly. It is best to apply a small amount of wax every three months to not only enhance the appearance of the furniture but also protect the wood.

Fifth, prevent solvents such as alcohol and banana oil from spilling. Otherwise, they will leave "scars" on the furniture surface. When the furniture surface is stained, wash it with mild soapy water, dry it, and then wax it again to restore its original appearance. However, never use solvent-based liquids such as gasoline, kerosene, or turpentine to wipe it, otherwise it will remove the gloss of the surface paint and lacquer.

Sixth, walnut oil for furniture maintenance is only suitable for unpainted furniture that has been treated with wax. It should not be used too frequently; generally, once a month is sufficient. In drier environments, the interval can be shortened to about once a month. It is also important to note that although walnut oil can be "air-dried," you must be careful with the amount used. Oils have dust-attracting properties; using too much will cause dust to adhere, resulting in a greasy feeling.

Seventh, dust is abrasive, so when wiping dust off mahogany furniture, use a soft cotton cloth to gently wipe back and forth along the wood grain. Using a hard, dry cloth to wipe the lacquer surface will cause scratches and dull its shine. A friendly reminder: when buying walnut oil, be aware that it is generally sold in bulk and is often adulterated. If the oil appears cloudy or contains many impurities, it is best not to buy it.

Eighth, pure walnut oil won't freeze into blocks in cold weather, while oil mixed with other ingredients is often less effective. If you don't have walnut oil, you can follow the ancient practice of wrapping walnut kernels in a cloth (preferably not synthetic fabric) and crushing them before wiping the surface; this works very well. Walnut oil has health benefits, but due to the processing technology and conditions, walnut oil used for wiping furniture should never be consumed.

There are many ways to maintain precious mahogany furniture in the summer. Doing the above points will help your furniture be better preserved and passed down through generations.
