Summer mahogany furniture maintenance, experts teach you to "add some oil"
The more precious an item is, the more it needs to be maintained. Mahogany furniture is loved by everyone because of its beautiful appearance, high collection value, and strong artistic atmosphere. Although mahogany furniture is durable, it also needs reasonable use and proper maintenance to extend its service life. Many mahogany furniture from the Ming and Qing dynasties have been preserved to this day with reasonable maintenance. So how should mahogany furniture be maintained in summer?
Here are some tips on how to maintain mahogany furniture in summer.
First, unlike ordinary furniture, mahogany furniture thrives in damp environments and avoids dryness. Therefore, mahogany furniture should be placed away from doorways, windows, vents, and other areas with strong airflow. It should be kept away from direct sunlight, and air conditioning should never be directed towards the furniture. Also, pay attention to humidity levels in both summer and winter. In the summer, when the air is humid, an air conditioner is recommended; in the winter, when the air is dry, a humidifier is recommended to maintain a moderate indoor humidity level.
Second, mahogany furniture must be used to store items appropriately. Objects stored in the cabinet should not exceed the door frame. If they are often squeezed and stuffed hard, the cabinet door will be deformed.
Third, tabletops and chair seats should be carefully protected from damage and cracks. When using or moving furniture, lift it up instead of dragging it to prevent the overall structure of the furniture from loosening. If the joints at the points of application are loose, re-glue and seal them before use.
Fourth, mahogany furniture generally has a long service life, so you should always protect the surface paint of the furniture. It is best to wipe it with a little wax every three months, which not only increases the beauty of the furniture, but also protects the wood.
Fifth, avoid spilling solvents like alcohol and banana oil, as this can cause "scars" on the furniture surface. If the furniture surface is stained, wash it with mild soapy water, let it dry, and then wax it again to restore it to its original appearance. Avoid using solvents like gasoline, kerosene, and turpentine, as this can remove the paint and varnish.
Sixth, walnut oil for furniture maintenance is only suitable for unpainted, waxed furniture. It shouldn't be used too frequently; generally, once a month is sufficient. In drier environments, the maintenance interval can be shortened to once a month or so. It's also important to note that while walnut oil can be air-dried, be mindful of the amount used. Oils attract dust, and using too much will cause dust to cling to the oil, creating a greasy feel.
Seventh, dust is abrasive, so when dusting mahogany furniture, use a soft cotton cloth and gently rub back and forth along the wood grain. Using a hard, dry cloth to rub the finish will scratch it and dull its luster. When purchasing walnut oil, be aware that it is generally sold in bulk and is often adulterated. If the oil appears cloudy or contains a lot of impurities, avoid purchasing it.
Eighth, pure walnut oil won't freeze into lumps when it's cold, but adulterated walnut oil is often less effective. If you don't have walnut oil, you can follow the ancient practice of wrapping walnut kernels in cloth (preferably not synthetic fabrics) and crushing them, and then wiping with them. This also works well. Walnut oil has health benefits, but due to the processing technology and conditions, walnut oil used to wipe furniture should never be eaten.
There are many ways to maintain precious mahogany furniture in summer. If you do the above points, your furniture can be passed down better.
