  Rivers meander and change course frequently. Scientists have discovered that the ratio between the actual distance between a river's starting and ending points (blue line in the diagram) and the straight-line distance (red line in the diagram) varies for each river, but the average of this ratio for all rivers in the world approaches 3.14, which is approximately pi. This result was first published by Stølum in 1996 in the prestigious journal *Science*. However, his argument only holds true under relatively idealized assumptions. Later, Grime actually surveyed 258 rivers and found that the result was smaller than pi, which he initially attributed to factors such as river erosion.
