My appliance casing has turned yellow after several years of use. What should I do? Are there any tips to fix this?

Many people have experienced this: the exteriors of appliances like air conditioners, washing machines, and water dispensers have yellowed after several years, making them look ugly. So, what can you do? Back in 2017, I had experience fixing yellowed appliances, and the results were excellent. The method is also very simple. Today, Nidi Deng will share two of my tips with you, hoping they will be helpful.

Why does the outer shell of an electrical appliance turn yellow after being used for several years?

It is easy to understand why the outer shell of electrical appliances turns yellow. This is because the outer shells of these electrical appliances that turn yellow are made of plastic polymer synthetic materials. What plastic fears most is the ultraviolet rays in the sun, as well as the influence of factors such as high temperature and chemical detergents. Over time, it will become more and more yellow. Therefore, many electrical appliances that we buy will turn yellow after a few years of use.

Use plastic yellowing remover to whiten appliance casings

I bought a second-hand house in 2016. The original owner had lived in it for 6 years, but the cabinet air conditioner in the living room, the wall-mounted air conditioner in the room, the video doorbell, and the distribution box had all turned yellow and looked very old.

After I moved into the house in January 2017, I, who love beauty, of course couldn't stand it, so I looked for a solution to remove the yellowing. Later, I bought a "plastic yellowing remover" online and followed the tutorial. I didn't expect the effect to be so good. Although it is not as white as new, it does look much better than before.

The picture above is a picture I found on the Internet, mainly to make it clear to everyone at a glance. It is basically the same as the situation at my house at that time. Because I didn’t think about sharing it when I dealt with the yellowing of the air conditioner before, I didn’t take a complete picture. I only took the following two pictures, and didn’t take pictures before the yellowing. Pay attention to the date on the picture, as shown in the picture below↓

How do you do it? It's actually very simple, as shown in the figure below. It's the same steps I used back then.

How to use:

1. Spray the yellowing remover evenly on the surface;

2. Then cover the yellowing surface with paper towels;

3. After laying out the paper towels, spray the yellowing remover again. The amount used should be such that the paper towels are completely soaked and liquid drips off.

4. Then wrap it with plastic wrap and leave it for more than 5 days before opening;

5. If the operation is improper and the yellowing is not ideal, repeat the operation.

【Notes】:

1. Only white plastic can be used. It is prohibited to use it on other materials. Please keep it away from fabrics, leather goods, furniture, floors, metal paint surfaces, computer and TV screens, etc. before use. If there are any places with these materials on electrical appliances, be sure to cover them with something.

2. When removing yellowing, please take protective measures and wear gloves to avoid splashing on the skin (it will produce white and burning sensation);

3. The temperature is lower in winter, and the effect of the yellowing remover will be weakened. It is recommended to increase the dosage during construction and seal it for more than 7 days. It will be better if it is exposed to the sun for more than 3 days.

Use special renovation stickers to beautify yellowed appliance housings

Using yellowing removers can certainly remove the yellowing and whiten the outer shell of electrical appliances, but it is only a temporary solution and the surface will still turn yellow after 1 to 2 years. So later I found special air conditioner stickers and distribution box stickers to upgrade the treatment. Unexpectedly, the effect was surprisingly good. Of course, the choice of pattern style is very important.

The picture below shows the wall-mounted air conditioner in my master bedroom. First, it was de-yellowing treated, and then a special sticker was affixed to the air conditioner. Of course, the wall was also re-decorated.

Look at the picture below, which is my living room. The cabinet air conditioner on the left in the picture was also treated with refurbished stickers. It has been two years and it is still the same as it was two years ago without any yellowing.

Looking at my distribution box, it had been treated to remove yellowing before, and later I put a renovation sticker on it to beautify it.

Which is better, yellowing remover or beautifying sticker?

1. Advantages and disadvantages of using yellowing remover

Advantages: Suitable for yellowing treatment of most electrical appliance casings, simple and easy to use.

Disadvantages: It can easily damage the skin of fingers, takes a long time to renovate, and only treats the symptoms but not the root cause.

2. Advantages and disadvantages of using refurbished stickers

Advantages: various patterns, no yellowing, easy to clean, and protects electrical appliances from scratches.

Disadvantages: There are few stickers suitable for electrical appliances, such as air conditioners, refrigerators, and distribution boxes. In addition, strong hands-on skills are required.

Conclusion

What should I do if the outer casing of an appliance that has been used for several years has turned yellow? My personal recommendation is to use a refurbishment sticker, but not all appliances have suitable stickers. Plastic yellowing remover can be used on any plastic appliance casing, so the choice depends on the situation.
