More careful design means less bleeding for your child!

It is no exaggeration to say

There is no child who does not grow up in the midst of stumbling.

But the consequences of such safety hazards vary greatly.

The pain can range from physical pain to unbearable pain of death.

Let’s take a look at a photo first↓

This is a photo of the author's baby taken last November. After checking the surveillance video, the child was playing and chasing each other, and accidentally tripped and hit the shoe cabinet next to the classroom door. Although there was a protective rubber pad on it, the impact was so strong that a large piece of flesh was knocked off, and stitches were required. For me, it was the first time I saw the baby's serious injuries. I didn't have time to complain at the time, but I was so heartbroken that I couldn't speak.......
Children's activity space as a long-term presence in landscape design
It is worth creating with great care.
It can be cute, funny, creative
But the premise must be as safe as possible
Although there are safety reminders in many places
But to truly create a safe place for children to play
It still requires joint efforts from all parties
As a designer, we must be vigilant.
Avoid some operational disadvantages and safety hazards through design

Waterscape design

01

Let’s talk about water first. It is the nature of almost all children to like playing with water, whether it is water in a pool, small puddles on the road after rain, or even their own urine, it seems that as long as it is liquid, they want to get involved.

Although it may seem repetitive and boring to adults, perhaps only children understand this pure joy. No matter if the clothes are wet or dirty, mom will wash them anyway. Remember the scene of Peppa Pig jumping in the mud puddle? Water is so attractive~
What is more attractive is the dynamic fountain, which is also one of the forms of waterscape in landscape design and the most enthusiastic way to create waterscape:
Dubai Fountain/WET

Whether it is an ornamental underwater fountain or a dry fountain that creates interesting interactions with people, it will be a very eye-catching presence in the landscape, especially in summer, it is the first choice for citizens to cool off.
However, not all fountains are harmless. Some can only be viewed from a distance and not played with. Many cities have such fountain squares, which always attract many children. Look at the following accident. In Weifang, Shandong, an 8-year-old boy, Xiaojie, was playing at the viewing fountain. He was lifted up by the high-pressure water column and fell to the ground, causing a ruptured rectum.

Why is the fountain so powerful?

Fountains are generally divided into low-pressure fountains and high-pressure fountains.

The pressure of low-pressure fountain water is 1-2 kg, and the jet height is 3-4 meters.
The water pressure of the high-pressure fountain is 10-15 kg, and the jet height can reach 50-60 meters.
Let's look at an experiment:
A 10-jin watermelon was instantly sprayed 3 meters into the air.

Waterscape design suitable for children

The design must be based on the child's perspective, with safety as the primary principle and tailored to the child's characteristics. The following are some design suggestions for reference only.

【1】The water should be shallow and clear
Shallow water is what children see. I think everyone has a happy stream in their childhood memories, where they played with friends and used their mother's towel to catch fish and shrimps... Even at this age, Xiaoman still has a special liking for shallow water. Shallow water can ensure the safety of children to a great extent. Even if they accidentally slip into the water, they will not drown.
In rainy weather, rainwater spills from the central patio into the kindergarten atrium, and the shallow puddles bring life to the children's carefree childhood. In winter, the freezing device on the atrium floor can create a small ice rink for the children. Snowflakes come in from the open-air roof, and the children play freely on the ice.
Another example is as follows:

Clean, that is a must. To achieve clean water, it is necessary to do a good job of post-maintenance of the waterscape, keep the water clean to prevent children from getting skin discomfort after long-term immersion in water, prevent moss from growing and slipping, clean up mud and sand, etc., and provide a good visual experience. Children have limited physical resistance, especially young babies have limited cognition, and they are likely to put water in their mouths to taste it, use it for bathing, or splash it on other babies, so it is important to maintain good water quality.

【2】Water should be soft
The softness here mainly refers to the impact of water . Just like the fountain we just mentioned, the low-pressure and soft water environment can better ensure the safety of young babies, and they can play at close range to satisfy their curiosity.

【3】Water should be interesting
Even a pool of stagnant water can successfully attract children's attention, not to mention an interesting waterscape. It can fully mobilize children's curiosity and playfulness. The fun here means that the addition of technological factors makes it the best playmate for children.
For example, in the previous old project, Suzhou Sunan Vanke Park from Zhang Tang Landscape, the waves launched by the wave-making machine not only added visual dynamic effects to the water platform, but the sound produced by the waves hitting the pool wall also brought auditory stimulation.

Another example is the Water Mist Island in Shenzhen's "Floating Islands" designed by Fangcheng . The site here is slightly concave, and a shallow pool will naturally form on rainy days, where people can play in the water; there is a spray device designed on the ground, which adjusts the microclimate while also adding fun;
Another example is the Zibo Zhulong River project of DreamDeck . This special arch fountain tunnel really adds to the fun of playing with water for the surrounding citizens. The designer used floor tiles and arch fountains to create an interactive tunnel space. When you step through the middle, it will trigger a chain reaction of lights and arch fountains. The fountain, which was originally a single-person experience, has now become one old and one young guarding a trigger point, and there are often people queuing behind each point.

Another example is the Longfor G-PARK Technology Park , which became a hot topic on WeChat Moments at the end of 2018. Technology has made the waterscape here more interesting. The tranquil water surface is created by the jumping springs, and the precise control makes the jumping springs have no delay. The jumping water drops follow the steps of the water, which is very enjoyable.

When talking about water, another thing that comes to mind is of course electricity .

Electric shock is also a major weapon of injury in waterscapes. Improper installation, untimely maintenance, and other reasonsmay cause fountain leakage and casualties. In August 2017, a little girl in Tiexi District, Siping, Jilin Province, was walking her dog in a landscape fountain when she was electrocuted and fell to the ground. The child's mother and grandmother came forward to rescue her, but they were also electrocuted. The little girl died that night.

In addition to leakage, another problem is the landscape lights .

First, landscape lights are sometimes damaged by human beings, causing the wires to be exposed , which can be dangerous if touched.

Instead, you should warn your children not to get close to them .

Ms. Sun from Rui'an, Zhejiang, took her 2-year-old son to the park to play. The child touched the ground lamp in the park with his hand, and unexpectedly, four or five large blisters immediately appeared on his palm.

Recreational facilities

Rides

02

Amusement facilities are the places most visited by children. Children also have an innate ability to find ways to play that are not designed, which puts higher safety requirements on the amusement facilities themselves. Otherwise, safety accidents can happen at any time:
Most residential areas have fitness equipment downstairs, but not many adults actually use them. Instead, they have become a playground for children, and you can always see many children using them in various "innovative ways":

However, fitness equipment can be a risky activity for children, and it is also one of the most common safety accidents for children. It is not uncommon for children to get stuck in fitness equipment due to their curiosity and playfulness.

In addition to fitness equipment, there are also the following common children's activity facilities, but they are also full of hidden dangers:
There is a spiral slide in Doumen Village, Yuyao, Ningbo. It rotates 270 degrees from a height of 1.9 meters and slides down. It is very exciting and popular among children. However, Mr. Han’s 7-year-old son fell off the track of the slide while playing on it, and his arm was severely fractured. This facility is 80 mm shallower than the national standard.

Inflatable facilities are also prone to accidents if they are not effectively fixed. The following two cases are both about children playing in strong winds, which blew away the children and the castles. The children fell from a high altitude and were seriously injured and died after failed rescue.

The five-year-old girl below suddenly fell while trampolineing and broke her bones.

There are many similar safety accidents. At present, the national standards in this regard are not in place. Strong manufacturers will control according to EU standards or US standards:
Every drop height protection, retreat distance, net rope opening size (cannot get stuck in the neck), screw hole sinking without scratches, polished edges, rounded corners, etc.

In addition, regarding the structure and load-bearing capacity of the facilities , since long-term use will cause structural damage to the equipment, it is necessary to set up according to extreme conditions that are higher than the instructions for use to eliminate safety hazards as much as possible at the beginning of the design.

Here, I would like to mention the non-powered parks that were originally popular in Europe and the United States . In recent years, the amusement equipment in non-powered parks has become more and more popular because of its high safety factor, long service life, low maintenance cost, strong entertainment, good interactivity, and unique user experience compared with other outdoor park amusement equipment.

Sub Base Platypus – Northern Park and Playground
An attractive amusement facility can be novel and unique in shape , such as an animal, a story, etc., with beautiful and eye-catching colors and rich and diverse game experiences , allowing children to learn through games, cultivate a spirit of exploration, the courage to overcome difficulties and the ability to create teamwork through communication.

Pavement design

Pavement design

03

Due to the limitation of physiological development, children have poor balance ability and fall down frequently. This requires more consideration in paving design. There are many paving materials that can be used as children's playgrounds, including plastic mats, stone, lawn, wooden floor, etc. For details, please refer to the table below:

When it comes to the paving of children's playgrounds, the first thing that comes to mind is plastic playgrounds . Indeed, the texture of plastic playgrounds is relatively soft, which can greatly reduce the damage caused by bumps, and the bright colors and rich patterns can also well realize the designer's ideas.

However, I believe everyone still remembers the toxic In order to reduce costs, some unscrupulous businesses used inferior materials such as scrap tires and broken scrap cables , which caused students in many schools across the country to suffer from nosebleeds, vomiting, rashes and other discomfort symptoms. This requires relevant departments of society to improve relevant industry standards and regulatory measures, and owners to strictly control quality to create a safe and healthy playground for children.

Plastic paving gives designers a lot of room to play. The creativity of patterns and colors can always bring surprises, which are interesting and entertaining. There is nothing that cannot be done, only what cannot be imagined.

In terms of stone paving, the ground needs to be flat and non-slip, such as horseshoe stone, avoid using polished stone, blue bricks that are prone to moss, and avoid unpolished sharp paving, such as glass, gravel and other materials that have safety hazards. PC imitation stone bricks, washed stone, terrazzo, etc. are more suitable choices.

Plant Design

Plant design

04

Plants are almost essential design elements in children's activity areas. A good plant configuration in children's activity areas can not only bring good landscape effects, but also comprehensively enhance children's perception abilities in terms of vision, hearing, smell, touch, and taste, which has excellent educational significance.

When it comes to educational significance, there are now more and more designs that use plants for science popularization and nature education, allowing children to learn to observe nature, learn about nature, and share the fun of nature!

However, not all plants can be planted. As children lack sufficient self-protection awareness, they have higher requirements for the safety of the venue. The selection of plants should be mainly trees for shade, supplemented by shrubs, and use thornless and non-toxic varieties; lawns should choose varieties that can withstand trampling. Here are some taboo plants in the design of children's activity venues!

[Toxic or allergy-prone plants should not be planted]
Especially for young children, they like to feel the world with their mouths, or they always like to touch beautiful flowers, so poisonous plants must not be planted. If you really want to plant them, you must also set up effective isolation and protection. For example, oleander, hydrangea, datura, nandina, azalea, daffodil, daphne, cassava, belladonna, ginkgo, privet, yellow safflower, vine, castor, poppy, saffron. Here are two chestnuts:

↑ Hydrangea, if ingested by mistake, will cause abdominal pain within a few hours. Other typical poisoning symptoms include skin pain, vomiting, weakness and sweating. There are also reports that patients may even experience coma, convulsions and blood circulation collapse.

↑ Ligustrum lucidum, the whole plant is highly poisonous, especially the black berries produced by Ligustrum lucidum in autumn. If eaten by mistake, it will cause vomiting, diarrhea, low blood pressure and even death. Be careful when using shrubs to enclose or divide the site.

↑ Nandina domestica, the whole plant contains nandinaline, which can cause systemic convulsions, cramps and other symptoms if ingested accidentally. In particular, the brightly colored fruits of Nandina domestica increase the risk of accidental ingestion in children.

[Plants with thorns should not be planted]
Plants with thorns can easily injure children's skin, such as holly, Xanthium sibiricum, soapberry , crabapple, rose, jujube tree, cactus, queen of queens, tiger thorn, and triangular queen of queens.

[Plants with low branch height should not be planted]
If the branch forks are at a low height, it is easy for children to climb and break it, and it is also easy for children to cause scratches when pushing and shoving each other while playing.

[Plants that are prone to diseases and insect pests should not be planted]
Such plants can easily cause redness and swelling on children's skin, such as poplar, mulberry, paper mulberry, Chinese tallow tree, and persimmon tree.

[Plants that easily produce too much flying catkins should not be planted]
This kind of plant can easily cause respiratory diseases in babies. Poplar, willow, sycamore, reed catkins, dandelions, kapok flowers, etc., their flying catkins can easily cause facial allergies, respiratory tract infections, and cause strong irritation, runny nose, cough, asthma and other reactions.

Parent Care Area

Parent care area

05

When it comes to this issue, the first thing worth mentioning is parents . When accompanying children, parents should never be too busy looking down at their phones. Only with enough attention from parents can some safety accidents be prevented in time, and only with careful care can children really play safely. The following cases are really heartbreaking:

In Wuhan, Hubei, a little girl was caught in a swing and her body was twisted backwards, causing fractures.

The following two cases are both because the parents were watching their mobile phones and neglected to supervise their children, resulting in the children not receiving timely help when they were in danger, and ultimately causing the children to drown.
Compared with the above three cases, this one was a close call. Fortunately, the parents discovered the child's behavior in time, otherwise the child would have definitely suffered a safety accident due to the high-speed rotation.

When designers design landscapes for children’s activities, they must also consider the setting of parent care areas . Seating facilities should be set up in the children’s activity area so that parents can quickly prevent accidents before they happen. The location of the care area should preferably ensure accessibility between the parents’ sight and the exit of the children’s activity area, so that parents can see whether their children have left the area and prevent their children from getting lost as much as possible.
