Jasmine Pest and Disease Control
The main pests affecting jasmine are leafrollers, spider mites, and scale insects. Leafrollers and spider mites are commonly controlled by spraying with a 2000-fold dilution of 1059 (a pesticide). Scale insects are tiny, sap-sucking pests that parasitize the undersides of branches and leaves. When jasmine is infested, the leaves develop grayish-white spots, and in severe cases, the entire plant dies. Control methods include spraying the branches and leaves with a 60-fold dilution of machine oil emulsion; or gently wiping the affected areas with your hands or brushing them off with an old toothbrush.
1. White silk disease
Prevention and control methods:
① This disease is prone to occur under high temperature and high humidity conditions, so a well-ventilated and well-drained garden site should be selected. During the rainy season, attention should be paid to drainage to reduce humidity.
② Avoid using contaminated soil for potted plants. The potting soil can be sterilized by heating with warm water (50% or higher) for 24 hours, then allowed to dry before use.
③ Remove the diseased plants and burn them. Sprinkle lime around the pit where the diseased plants were planted to disinfect the soil before replanting new plants.
④ In the early stages of the disease, irrigate the soil around the stem with a 50% carbendazim solution diluted 500 times, or a 500-fold dilution of thiophanate-methyl, or a 0.3% lime-sulfur mixture followed by lime powder. When the disease occurs, remove the seedlings, wash them thoroughly in clean water, disinfect them with a 1000-fold dilution of mercuric chloride, and then replant them.
2. Twig blight
Prevention and control methods:
① Promptly prune and burn diseased branches.
② Spray with 800 times diluted carbendazim or thiophanate-methyl. During the growing season, spray with 500 times diluted 50% thiophanate-methyl wettable powder or 500 times diluted 75% chlorothalonil wettable powder.
3. Purple leaf spot (root rot)
Control methods: Spray with a 1000-fold dilution of 50% carbendazim wettable powder, or use a 1000-fold dilution of mercuric chloride solution, or a 1:5:100 solution of cypermethrin and lime, or a 1000-fold dilution of potassium permanganate solution to drench the root collar. Severely affected plants should be dug up, burned, and the planting pits disinfected before replanting.
4. Scale insects
Prevention and control methods: ① Remove and burn the affected branches and leaves.
② During the non-flowering period, spray with 800-1000 times diluted phosmet, malathion, or fenitrothion, or spray with 10-15 times diluted pine resin mixture.
5. Red spider
Control methods: During the spider mite infestation period, spray with 40% trichlorfon at a dilution of 1000 times, or 40% dimethoate at a dilution of 1000 times, or 50% tricyclazole wettable powder at a dilution of 2000-3000 times, or 73% dicofol emulsion at a dilution of 1500-2000 times. Multiple pesticides can also be used alternately.
