How to maintain furniture in winter
Introduction: As the seasons change and winter arrives, we've all stocked up on winter gear. However, maintaining your furniture is also important, as furniture needs to prepare for winter too. How should you care for your furniture in winter?
When winter arrives, the air is often dry and cold. In addition, indoor heating can "bake" the furniture, making it prone to cracks and fading. Therefore, appropriately increasing the humidity in the home can effectively prevent furniture from cracking.
Note the placement of the humidifier.
Humidification in winter should be moderate. Wood's inherent hygroscopic properties make it easily susceptible to changes in the environment. Therefore, humidification should be even, and the humidifier should be placed in a well-ventilated area with moderate lighting. It should not be placed near furniture, otherwise, the wood may absorb moisture and expand, causing furniture to crack and rot, metal parts to rust, glued parts to come apart, and chrome plating to peel off. Generally, during the heating season, maintaining a room humidity level between 40% and 60% using a humidifier is suitable.
Maintain humidity and reduce window opening
Many families with good heating systems ventilate their homes for extended periods each day due to the high indoor temperature. Many mistakenly believe that opening windows in winter lowers the indoor temperature, naturally reducing cracks in wooden furniture. In fact, the higher the air temperature, the more moisture it contains at saturation, meaning that indoor humidity is often higher than outdoor humidity in winter. The real cause of cracks in furniture is humidity, not temperature. Opening windows at this time only brings in cold outside air, making the indoor air even drier. Therefore, in winter, reducing ventilation time and maintaining indoor humidity is the correct way to maintain furniture.
There are techniques to cleaning furniture.
Due to the dry winter climate, wood becomes more fragile. Combined with the heat from heating systems, a significant amount of moisture is lost from the wood, making it more porous. Even normally sturdy floors or furniture can be easily scratched during cleaning. Therefore, when cleaning, avoid using sharp cleaning tools on the wood surface. Regular furniture maintenance is also important; prevent hard metal objects or other sharp tools from hitting the furniture to protect its surface from damage. When wiping furniture, do not simply use a damp cloth. Instead, use a professional furniture care oil, which can lock in the moisture in the wood, prevent cracking and warping, nourish the wood, and extend the furniture's lifespan.
