Handson experiment: Double the lifespan of fresh cut flowers | Extra chapter of the renovation house
This week's Resident Art Renovator - You spray pesticides every day, but she turned the factory into a garden, making everyone envious of Eyelashes ' garden. However, many students also left us messages saying that as urban animals, without such favorable conditions as Eyelashes, do they have to give up the days of being a "butterfly".
Our answer is, of course not! Going to the flower market to buy a bunch of flowers on the weekend, or having flowers delivered to your home, can put you in a good mood.
Through a 10-day experiment, I have found a way to double the lifespan of fresh cut flowers . I am sharing it with you today.
The main contents are:
1. A clever way to extend the flowering period to 2 weeks or even longer
2. Design the height of the vase and flowers
3. How to choose a good vase
4. What kind of flower goes with what kind of vase?
Many people have had this experience: you bought a bunch of fresh and beautiful flowers and put them at home, but they all wilted after two or three days. The reason is that you didn't change the water and prune them frequently.
When you buy flowers home, you must first process them
After buying the flowers, the first step is to process them using the water cutting method:
The water cutting method is to first fill the washbasin with water, soak the fresh flowers you bought in it, use flower scissors to cut the flower stem diagonally 3-4cm upwards along the bottom (the specific amount depends on the degree of decay at the bottom of the flower stem) , and leave the flower in the water for about half an hour to allow the flower to fully absorb water before moving it to the vase.
Why should the flower stems be cut at an angle : the larger the cut surface, the more conducive it is to water absorption.
Zhuyi Tips: Some flowers, such as roses and hydrangeas, have white flocs in their stems, which will hinder water absorption and need to be scraped off with scissors to extend the flowering period.
Tips to prolong flowering period
To extend the flowering period to two weeks or even longer, you need at least three different types of flower vases : high, medium and low. Don't be scared, you don't necessarily have to use a special vase. Sometimes a good-looking cup can also produce unexpectedly good results.
After my practical test, take a look at the flower arrangement diary I recorded:
(Important reminder again: change the water every day and trim every day)
Days 1-3: Using length to arrange flowers
Please ignore the stove at the back.
When I bought it, I used a normal vase of about 22cm in height. If I change the water every day, it is fine for fresh flowers to last for about 3 days. When arranging flowers, you can make a difference in height to make the whole look layered .
After pruning on the 4th to 6th day, change to a small flower pot
This aqua blue vase is actually a cup~
The cut at the bottom of the flower stem will not absorb water effectively after it rots, so it must be cut off . After the pruning a few days ago, the length of the flower stem has become much shorter. At this time, the bouquet can be transferred to a smaller vase. Because each flower has different habits, the degree of decay varies. After removing the damaged flowers, you can also separate the original bouquet.
On the 7th to 10th day, change to a smaller flower pot
The flower stem is getting shorter and shorter, so I transferred the last part to another shorter cup and enjoyed the flowers until the last moment. Many people like to collect cups. In fact, the cups at home can also be used as flower vases, and the effect is not bad.
Height design of vases and flowers
If the flowers are too long, they will look sloppy; if they are too short, they will look crowded and crooked. Here are three best balance ratios:
1 flower vase 1:1
This is a relatively basic but most practical proportion, and is best suited for mixed bouquets. The length of the flower stem should be twice the length of the vase, and the flowers need to have different heights to look good.
The illustrations of designer Michael's home follow the 1:1 height design of flowers and vases. This height design is very common and is also very popular in mixed bouquets. To learn more about Michael's home, please see ➡️ I didn't expect that home decoration these days also comes with a boyfriend|Zhu Yi Renovation Home
The flowers that Eyelashes picked and inserted for us also follow the principle of 1:1 height design.
2 flower vases 0.5:1
This principle of proportion is suitable for small low-rise flower vases, especially those with a height of less than 10 cm. Shifting the center of gravity downwards can make the arrangement denser and easier to achieve visual balance. If you don't want it to be too round, you can use one or two slender flowers to create a sense of height.
3 flower vase 2:1
Slender branches are suitable for inserting into a vase with a taller body. Because the branches are slender, the center of gravity will not move upwards, so it is suitable for creating large works and can also magnify the space . If flowers are inserted together with branches, the flowers that look heavier need to be placed closer to the mouth of the vase to maintain the balance of volume.
How to choose a good vase
Not only flowers, but vases also come in various shapes, but don't be dazzled by the choices. Remember one principle: the basic style is called basic because it can be matched with anything.
Putting aside those weird-shaped vases, here are two versatile basic ones:
1 25cm high cylindrical glass vase
Cylindrical vases are the best style that can be easily matched with any flower material, and different sizes can be prepared for easy use. Because the flowers displayed in the flower market are mostly 40-50cm in length, in terms of proportion, a cylindrical vase of about 25cm is the best choice .
2 12cm high small vases
When there are fewer flowers or the flower stems are cut short, the 12cm height becomes more advantageous. It is not only easy to support and fix a small amount of flowers, but even beginners can create a uniform and beautiful arrangement . Such small flower arrangements are not only suitable for being placed on the coffee table at home, but also in the office.
What kind of flower goes with what kind of vase?
The last part is to find inspiration. From these beautiful pictures, we can probably see some clues and find out what kind of vase is suitable for what kind of flowers. ⬇️
Champions Cup with flowers
⬆️The Champions League trophy vases that often appear in European and American home magazines are very suitable for making some large-scale creations with clusters of flowers. In fact, such vases look good even if you casually insert a few slender branches into them.
Light and flared flower shapes in food cans
⬆️Originally a storage container , Mason jars are often used as flower vases abroad. The slightly narrow mouth of the jar is very suitable for matching with light, outward-expanding floral shapes.
Enamel kettle brings rural charm
⬆️The enamel kettle is the kind of item that can easily make a flower stand out by simply inserting it, and it is very suitable for small flowers and grasses with a wild flavor. Just expand outward along the narrow mouth of the bottle to insert the flower, and the entire outline will be very beautiful.
Narrow-mouth bottles are suitable for standing out
⬆️If you feel lazy and don’t want to create this week, it doesn’t matter, a flower + a simple vase can also be wonderful. Whether it is a flower or a leaf of the Internet celebrity, it will look natural and beautiful.
It would be even better if there were a few more of them, big and small!
Another thing to remember is that beauty comes from life. Pay attention to the details in life and you will find beauty everywhere. As long as it can hold water, anything can become a flower vase. ⬇️
