【Flowering period】Six common methods of controlling the flowering period of flowers

  1. Chrysanthemum

Chrysanthemum is a short-day plant, and flower buds will differentiate only under short-day conditions. Therefore, the flowering period can be controlled by controlling the length of daylight. To achieve flowering under long-day conditions, short-day treatment should be carried out. Cultivate the plant to be strong in advance. When the shoots grow to 9-12 cm, only 9-10 hours of light per day are given. The rest of the time, the plant can be covered with black cloth or black plastic film (preferably in the morning and evening, because it is too hot at noon). The effective induction of short-day light is at the top, so the upper part must be completely dark, and the base is not strictly required. After about 30-40 days of treatment, the chrysanthemum will form flower buds, and the cover can be removed later, and fertilizer and water management can be strengthened. In order to delay flowering, late-flowering varieties can also be selected, and the method of extending the daylight can be used to prevent the formation of flower buds and thus delay flowering.

  2. Lotus

Lotus flowers mostly bloom from June to August. To make them bloom on National Day, you can use early-flowering varieties that only take about 50 days to bloom. Turn the pot for the second time in mid-July so that they can bloom on National Day. New lotus roots of late-flowering varieties should be formed in early September, and then planted in a greenhouse with a room temperature above 22℃, so that the lotus can bloom in winter.

  3. Camellia

You can use the method of adjusting temperature to promote or delay flowering. To delay flowering, you should choose late-flowering varieties. Before storage, the whole plant should be wrapped with thatch to prevent cold. Put it in a cold storage at 2℃-3℃ and see about 6 hours of weak light every day. The treatment time is about 1 month, which can achieve the purpose of delaying flowering. For spring flowering varieties, after meeting the low temperature requirements, you can catch early flowering by heating.

  4. Peony

To bloom before the Spring Festival, you should choose varieties that bloom early and frequently, such as Yufen, Yulouchun, and Taohuahong. For 5-6-year-old plants with strong growth, after the leaves fall, put the peony in a pot, try not to damage the root system, place it in a place with a low temperature, fertilize it once, and then move it into a greenhouse with a room temperature of about 25℃. Spray water on the plant 5-6 times a day, and only spray the branches after the leaves come out. When the buds are colored, transfer them to a low-temperature greenhouse, so that the flowering period can be maintained for about 20 days. If you want to postpone the normal flowering period of the peony, you can use refrigeration to extend its dormancy period. Keep the temperature above 0℃, and have weak light indoors for 3-4 hours a day.

  5. Poinsettia

Poinsettia is a typical short-day plant, so by adjusting the length of light exposure, the purpose of controlling the flowering period can be achieved. If you want it to bloom on National Day, you can start from early August and use short-day treatment for about 40 days, and then the beautiful red bracts will appear in late September. If you want it to bloom in the New Year, you don't need to shade it. After that, move it into a greenhouse for cultivation, and the bracts will naturally turn red. If you want to delay the flowering period, you can use lights to extend the light exposure time to achieve the purpose.

  6. Azalea

Azaleas differentiate flower buds in autumn. To make them bloom in winter, they can be moved to a greenhouse for cultivation, with a temperature of 20℃-25℃ and water sprayed on the branches and leaves frequently. In this way, they can bloom luxuriantly in one and a half months. If they are to bloom on New Year's Day, they should be treated with a low temperature of about 0℃ for 1-2 weeks before entering the greenhouse. To delay the flowering of azaleas, they can be kept in a low temperature state, placed in a cold room, and kept at 1℃-3℃. If they are stored for a long time, there should be lights in the room. The storage time is preferably 15-20 days before the desired flowering.
