The most obvious difference between a stool and a chair is that a stool has no backrest, while a chair does. Stools are more convenient. For example, in a crowded train station, many people carry a foldable stool that they can open and sit on when they are tired. Chairs are more comfortable than stools because the backrest can share part of the body's weight, but they are not as convenient as stools.

The seat height of a chair is generally around 40cm, while the seat height of a stool can be as low as close to the ground or as high as a bar stool. Chairs are generally suitable for staying quietly in a certain space, while stools are more interactive with people and can be placed anywhere.

Since stools have almost no restrictions on design and are very flexible, they are loved by designers. Let's take a look at some of the more creative stool designs.

1.N-S STOOL

A simple stool assembled with magnets

NS STOOL is a design work by Taiwanese designer Shen Yuhao. It uses three curved plywood sheets to form a simple stool. Magnets are embedded in its three contact points, and the mutual attraction of the magnets gives the stool a fastening force.

This design is very clever. First, the combination can greatly reduce transportation costs. Second, the stool can be quickly assembled and disassembled and reassembled by stacking and fixing with magnets. Advantages: simple shape, strong practicality, low transportation cost, etc.

2.Eelgrass Stool

Sustainable stools from the ocean

This is a design by designer Carolin Pertsch. The seat of this stool is made of eelgrass, which is an aquatic plant of the family Macrophylla. It is widely distributed in shallow waters in the temperate zone of the northern hemisphere, such as bays and river estuaries. In Germany alone, thousands of tons of eelgrass are cleaned and transported to landfills every year. The designer took advantage of this and recycled the so-called "garbage".

The source of the material is abundant. After it is dried, bio-resin is added and mixed thoroughly, and then it is put into a mold and pressurized.

Depending on the color of eelgrass, it can be divided into three categories: light, medium, and dark.

This stool should be considered an environmentally friendly product. Firstly, the source of the material is the secondary utilization of waste, which saves resources; secondly, it can be naturally degraded after being discarded and buried, reducing pollution and damage to the environment.

3.AA STOOL

Infinitely extendable stool

The design comes from the Japanese Torafu Architectural Design Office and is produced by Ishinomaki Workshop. Through the calculation of angles, the designed AA stools can be connected very closely, so that they can be combined as needed.

A single AA stool actually has the function of sitting, and of course it can be combined in pairs. When two AA stools are placed at a certain distance and covered with wooden boards, it becomes a very practical product display stand in the store. When multiple AA stools are combined, they can also form a long bed for rest.

4.Just a stool

Stool tied with cloth strips

Israeli studio blitzkrieg has studied a variety of stools made of cloth strips. Most of them are tied together through grooves reserved on the outside to fix the parts. Although it looks a bit simple and crude, it is still a feasible structural form.

5.Stool smoking

Stool fastened with rope

The stool is designed by Spanish designer  Martín Azúa. The material of the stool is beech, and the wooden stick is tightened by rotating the rope to fix it in the groove of the stool leg. The tension of the rope is large, and when people sit on it, the three legs actually have an outward tension, so there is no problem with the legs being placed on the wooden stick.
