Hans J. Wegner

Representative works: The chair, Shell Chair

Hans J. Wegner was born in Tonder, Andersen's hometown, in 1914. He learned furniture carpentry skills when he was a teenager. When he founded his studio in 1943, he was also awarded the honor of Royal Industrial Designer. Wegner has won almost all the awards that designers dream of. You can even say that Denmark's world-famous wooden furniture is inseparable from his contribution.

Interestingly, his home designs are closely related to furniture, especially his chairs, because of their scientific structure, perfect shape and appropriate materials, a chair can exude a peaceful and serene Zen atmosphere.

What made Wegener famous was an armchair named "The Chair" designed by him in 1949. It is known as the most beautiful chair in the world and costs about NT$179,200. Kennedy and Nixon sat on The Chair specially purchased by the TV station during the live debate of the presidential election. Later, presidents and celebrities endorsed it on important occasions, which shows its status among chairs. 

The most common chair in our daily life (which has been imitated countless times) is the Shell Chair he designed. The whole chair is made up of three minimalist components. Because the seat cushion looks like the corners of a curved mouth, it is also called the "Smiling Chair".

In his 93 years of life, Wegener designed more than 500 chairs, and there are many representative works, such as the Peacock Chair, which has a beautiful shape and effectively avoids the structural instability of the Windsor Chair, or the Folding Chair, which can be easily leaned against the corner, and the Flag Halyard Chair , which is full of holiday feeling ...

Arne Jacobsen

Representative works: Ant Chair, Egg Chair, Swan Chair, etc.

When it comes to Arne Jacobsen, there are a lot of famous titles that certify his extraordinary achievements: the most influential Nordic architect and industrial design master in the 20th century, Denmark's national treasure-level design master, the father of Nordic modernism, the advocate of "Danish functionalism", etc. This shows his status in Nordic design.

Arne, who was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, loved painting since childhood, but he eventually chose to pursue a career in architecture in order to ensure his livelihood. When he designed a series of landmark buildings in Denmark, he designed chairs in the buildings to create an overall atmosphere, and they are still popular today.

For example, when designing the Novo Pharmaceutical Factory in 1951, the Ant Chair was also designed. This chair has been a best-seller for half a century. The only difference is that the chair has four legs instead of three, while its lightweight, compact and stackable features are still retained.

Another classic of his , the Egg Chair, was designed by him when he was designing the AS Royal Hospital in 1958. He got inspiration from the Womb Chair, the work of Eero Saarine, the designer of the Tulip Chair, and made the armrests and backrest of the chair form a smooth outline, which looks like an egg from a distance. In the nearly 60 years since its birth, the Egg Chair has remained popular and often appears in movies and TV shows such as "Men in Black" and "Sex and the City". Arne's design philosophy focuses on practicality and is deeply influenced by the ideas of Italian designer and historian Ernesto Rogers, who believes that design is equal - from a city to a spoon, the design should be equal.

Mart stam

Representative Works: Cantilever Chair

Mart Stam is a Dutch architect. Unlike Hans J. Wegner, he established his unshakable position in the furniture industry with just one work. In 1926, the world's first cantilever chair was born. This "C-shaped" chair leg structure swept away the rule that a chair must have at least three legs. The first suspended chair was made by cutting and connecting metal gas pipes. The shape of this chair was extremely avant-garde and neat, and it caused a sensation as soon as it was launched.

The Diamond Chair is the ultimate expression of Bertoia's personal aesthetic creativity. The geometric diamond shape is outlined by iron mesh, and the mesh structure fits the human body curve. Two metal legs are welded underneath, which later became the popular Diamond Chair from the visual and metaphorical point of view . In the group photo of American contemporary design masters and their masterpieces, Bertoia and the Diamond Chair are prominently listed, which shows their status.
