Does cracking in rosewood furniture always indicate a quality problem?

Natural and environmentally friendly rosewood furniture exudes natural and primitive beauty. Coupled with its enduring durability and high collectible value, it has always been popular among middle- and high-end consumers. However, some rosewood furniture users have expressed their frustration with cracking. What causes this cracking? Is there a problem with the furniture's quality? And what should be done if it cracks? The China Home Furnishing Investment Research Institute will unravel these mysteries for you.

Does cracking in rosewood furniture indicate a quality problem?

Many people believe that if rosewood furniture cracks, then the rosewood must be fake. This is not the case. Even genuine rosewood furniture is prone to cracking. Even priceless sandalwood furniture exhibited at the Palace Museum has shown cracks and required repair.

Four Reasons Why Rosewood Furniture Crashes

Reason 1: Moisture content of the rosewood

If the moisture content of rosewood furniture is not properly controlled, quality problems such as cracking and warping will occur. After the furniture is produced, the moisture content and drying stress of the wood determine that the shape and material of the furniture will not change. Therefore, controlling the moisture content of rosewood furniture is very important. The balanced moisture content will prevent cracking and warping due to environmental factors such as sunlight, excessive cold, or excessive heat.

Reason 2: Due to weather

The moisture content of furniture should be one to two percentage points lower than the average moisture content of the air. Due to geographical differences, the climate and weather vary across my country, thus affecting the required moisture content of rosewood furniture. For example, Beijing's average annual moisture content is 11.4%, so the moisture content of rosewood furniture should be controlled at 10.4% or 9.4%; in the south, where the average air moisture content is 14%, 12% to 13% is required. Therefore, some rosewood furniture from the south may crack after being transported to the north.

Reason 3: Improper use

Some people don't take good care of their valuable mahogany furniture. They place it near a window in the bedroom, exposing their "treasures" to direct sunlight, or wipe off dust with overly damp towels, or move the furniture around carelessly, causing damage to the frame. All of these things will affect the durability of the furniture.

Reason 4: Damage during transportation

Furniture is inevitably subject to bumps and knocks during transportation, and the weather makes transporting rosewood furniture even more difficult. Although rosewood furniture is more "sturdy" than furniture made of other materials, it is still not immune to damage if not properly maintained.

How to salvage cracked rosewood furniture?

If it's a tiny crack that isn't visible to the naked eye, it's very easy to fix. Just drip some 502 glue along the crack, then gently scrape off any excess glue with a blade. Be careful not to damage the furniture's paint with the blade.

If it's a small crack that has already formed, the treatment will be relatively more complicated. Here are two emergency remedies for your reference only.

1. Boil old newspapers cut into small pieces, a suitable amount of alum, and water together into a paste. Carefully insert the paste into the crack and wait for it to solidify.

2. Mix white glue and sawdust evenly, embed the mixture into the gaps, and polish it with sandpaper after 24 hours.

Of course, the above are only remedial measures for minor cracks. If you encounter large cracks, you should call a professional for repairs.
