Curtains: The underestimated savior of living atmosphere

Curtains are an inevitable product of the development of human habitation.

From the earliest use of animal skins or branches, to the use of natural materials such as linen in ancient Egypt, to the use of tapestries and intricate hand-embroidered curtains in wealthy homes during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, these curtains were often expensive and luxurious decorations. In some houses, people used straw mats or bamboo curtains. Curtains made of silk, satin or other precious fabrics often appeared around the windows of palaces, temples, mansions and other places.

In addition to the functions of shading and protecting privacy, curtains also play an important decorative role. Today, people have given curtains higher expectations on this basis and have assumed the important responsibility of adjusting the atmosphere of the room.

Light, Curtains and Ambience

When did you first realize the importance of curtains?

Jiang Bola, who was born in 1990, said that when she was a child, every household was popular with European-style curtain combinations, which required a layer of gauze curtains + blackout curtains + valances, and her own home was no exception. In the millennium, her uncle's new home was renovated, and he used very simple orange velvet curtains in the room. One winter morning, she went to her uncle's house to play, and the bedroom was filled with orange, and the atmosphere of the whole room became warm. That was the first time she realized that curtains are not only used to block light, but can also change the indoor environment with the sunlight.

This is simply the living version of James Turrell. Turrell is an American contemporary artist who studies perceptual psychology and is good at using light and space as creative materials. But rather than saying it is his work, it is better to say that Turrell has created a space, allowing everyone who comes in to have a private experience of being in a different atmosphere. Instead of receiving the information that the artist wants to convey, you focus on understanding your own feelings.

In this work, light becomes Turrell's material .

● He has set up permanent installations in dozens of cities around the world

● At Dongjingyuan in Beijing, you can face the naked sky through the open patio on the roof, where artificial light and natural light are intertwined.

Can you live without curtains?

Designer Gala said that from the perspective of light blocking, he could do without curtains at all, and it would be nice to live a life of working from sunrise to sunset, but from an aesthetic point of view, curtains are very necessary.

In design, we often emphasize the "quality of space" . In fact, the core is to deal with the relationship between people and light.

Danish designer Poul Henningsen said that the most suitable atmosphere light for residential space lighting is light close to sunset. In the daytime, light and thin gauze curtains or Roman blinds play a vital role. You can choose beige colors such as apricot or milky white, which can adjust the dazzling color temperature of more than 4000k to around 2700k. This color temperature is very similar to the feeling of sunset light, which enhances the intimacy of indoor light.

At this time, curtains and light became materials that I could use in my design. They interacted and cooperated in the space, forming expressions of different design languages, thus creating different spatial atmospheres.

If the room atmosphere has the best partner,

What kind of curtains would it be?

Taking the public areas where people usually spend the most time at home as an example, because the functions here are relatively mixed, in addition to having a sense of atmosphere, it must also be able to meet a variety of needs such as watching TV, eating, and having fun.

In fact, there is no need to use two thick curtains in such public spaces. For most people, blackout curtains or thick curtains will not be drawn 95% of the time.

The strategy we often use in public areas is to only use one layer of light-filtering curtains, which can be vertical gauze curtains or thin Roman blinds. However, Roman blinds may not be so popular, and many suppliers on the market may not be able to do it well.

One difference between vertical gauze curtains and Roman blinds in terms of spatial experience is that the former can flutter in the wind to create some dynamics in the room; the latter can become a soft light background board for the interior space. Any furniture or plants placed in front of it will look neat, and the entire living scene will become softer, and it will look good in any way you take pictures.

In addition to the atmosphere, if you need to watch the projection and create a very dark environment, you can add a roller blind with better light blocking performance. This is a better way to balance the atmosphere and function.

Recommendations and usage of curtains

100 yuan and 1000 yuan curtains,

What's the difference?

Fabric

First of all, there are differences in the fabric itself. The material, texture, dyeing process, weaving method, and color fastness will all be different.

For example, the same color can be dyed with different dyeing techniques to produce very different colors. The world's top fabric brands also have laboratory-level color research and development departments, which is something that many small fabric manufacturers cannot do.

In terms of texture, some curtains now have silk woven into them. Silk itself has a certain luster, and when combined with sunlight, the curtains look like fishing nets cast out at sunset, glittering. The atmosphere of the space is instantly different.

In addition, some special fabrics can also bring special effects. For example, a curtain used in the Liaigre project looks white, but it is actually made of wool. If you look closely, you can see long hairs. This project is in a ski resort, and the atmosphere is quite good.

British designer Kelly Hoppen likes to use a fabric with large holes and a gauze material. The light passes through it and is scattered on the ground, creating a mottled light and shadow effect.

Tracks and accessories

Different curtains use different tracks.

For example, the tracks for vertical blinds and roller blinds are completely different. If it is an electric roller blind, the requirements for the tracks are higher.

Some of the better rail brands include Fontos from the Netherlands, Gerns from Switzerland, and the Dutch Honstar from the Netherlands, which is used by the Okura Hotel in Amsterdam, the Ritz-Carlton in Berlin, the Grand Hyatt Beijing, and the Park Hyatt Beijing.

There are also many domestic manufacturers copying their products, but the smoothness and durability in actual use are questionable.

In addition, related accessories that are often overlooked also play an important role in the appearance and usability of curtains.

Production process

The production of curtains is also very important. For example, there are many types of Roman blinds, and many suppliers could not make them in the early days. Some have extremely high requirements for the drape and texture of the fabric, such as the Roman blinds without cross braces used by designer Vervoordt in wabi-sabi style interiors. Some have very high requirements for the flatness of the fabric, and each cross brace and bottom weight are very important parts, and the overall craftsmanship is also very high. For example, the projects of the French luxury brand Liaigre and many hotels often use them.

Another example is the serpentine curtain, which has a serpentine track on it. This track needs to be sewn together with the fabric to fit perfectly, and these are also part of the craftsmanship.

Choose which curtains to use.

The key is to look at the space itself.

Determine the size and hanging method of the curtains.

Curtains that can guide vision horizontally in residential spaces are more valuable.

We often hear that an entire wall should be covered with vertical blinds. This actually evolved from the system logic of the modern architectural master Mies van der Rohe.

However, when designing in current residential spaces, we will deliberately create a low center of gravity and turn the visual direction of the entire space into a horizontal direction. You can look at the small houses in South Korea and Japan, where this treatment will have a very good effect when the floor height is not high.

At this time, vertical curtains like Mies's are not suitable, as they still guide the vision vertically. You can use Roman blinds, Venetian blinds, Shangri-la blinds, etc. On the one hand, they can guide the horizontal lines, and on the other hand, by pulling them half-high, the curtain lines and furniture lines can be connected horizontally, which will update the visual center of gravity and make the house appear more spacious in a limited floor height.

There is another misunderstanding that you must avoid. Don't cover the wall with windows with curtains. Leave more white space on the wall to give your home more possibilities.

With horizontal visual guidance,

It can be flexibly used according to the needs of specific scenarios.

For example, the ACE Hotel in Chicago combines horizontal blinds with vertical curtains.

It can also be a thin layer of light-filtering Roman blinds, with another layer of vertical blinds or thick Roman blinds on the outside, or it can be a roller blind with strong light-blocking function.

How to choose Roman blinds that are a great light filter?

Roman blinds are used in common residences today, and have two most important advantages:

One is to create a horizontal visual effect. With this goal in mind, we first gave up Roman blinds that have extremely high requirements for fabric drape and no horizontal braces.

Another is to create a gentle sunset light. In addition, it should be able to match most home scenes and style effects, and it should be easy to take care of the housework. After many rounds of fabric screening, we finally determined a sail white fabric with natural texture, handmade texture, high flatness, and no bleaching or dyeing.

We have more than ten years of project experience in the design field, and have used many Roman blinds, some of which are relatively cost-effective and some are world-class. This time, we found a Roman blind supplier that has good comprehensive conditions in scene effects, various details, daily care, etc., and matches the price with the value, and supplies top hotels. We also use our design experience to select a Roman blind that can simultaneously create horizontal vision and form gentle sunset light, hoping to bring a beautiful atmosphere to your life.

We do not pursue the ultimate cost-effectiveness, but a higher quality-price ratio. The ideal life experience brought by good items often always exceeds the value of the items themselves.

We will present the application of this Roman blind in actual space to you in the next issue of "Good Room Happenings" column, so stay tuned.
