Cultivation matters of cut flower wintersweet

1. Characteristics of Wintersweet

Perennial fast-growing evergreen shrub. The leaves are opposite linear leaves, like pine needles, and are evergreen all year round. The flowers are plum-shaped, with waxy and shiny petals in pink or white, with purple or golden yellow centers. It can bloom in the same year as a 15 cm tall seedling. It grows fast , and the plants grow to more than one meter in the same year of cultivation. The tree shape is beautiful, and it can bloom pink and white flowers in the coldest winter. When picked as cut flowers, the flowering period is as long as 1-2 months.

2. Common varieties

The stems of Australian wintersweets are 60 to 90 centimeters long, with many short branches on the stems, which are covered with a large number of five-petal flowers, mainly in pink, purple, red, pink, white and light yellow . The mainstream cut flower categories are mainly flat-headed medium flowers and flat-headed large flowers .

3. Growth conditions

Wintersweet is drought-tolerant and barren-tolerant, and has strong adaptability. It can adapt to -3℃- 40℃ , and can be cultivated in greenhouses on a large scale in extremely cold places. It likes good ventilation and is adapted to areas with dry summers. Although it can grow in most types of soil, it prefers slightly acidic soil with a pH value of about 6 and good drainage and a dry environment.

4. Output

Choose seedlings with well-developed root systems. 1000-1100 wintersweets should be planted per mu of land , with a planting density of 80cm×80cm. In the first year, a 15cm tall seedling can grow up to 90-120cm a year, and on average, two 40-90cm cut flowers can be harvested from each seedling. In the second year, on average, 20 cut flowers can be harvested from each seedling.

5. Nutrient Requirements

Wax flowers require very little fertilizer. Appropriate nitrogen fertilizer can increase branch length, reduce yellow and abnormal leaves, increase yield, and extend the vase life. An appropriate amount of potassium can also increase the yield of commercial branches. The addition of phosphorus fertilizer has no significant effect on the various characteristics of wintersweets, and it is not necessary to add phosphorus fertilizer every year. (It is recommended to use Huawuque 20-10-20+TE in the early stage and Huawuque 15-10-30+TE in the later stage). Nutrients can be supplemented by foliar spraying during the seedling stage. Watering should be done frequently in the early stage of planting, but not too much. After the wintersweets survive, they mainly absorb water from a depth of 60 cm due to their deep root system, so they are quite drought-resistant.
