How to make a tree stump stoolMost of the stools in our homes are ordinary and have no special features. For some young people who pursue innovation, this traditional stool seems to be too lacking in novelty. So how can we design and make a stool that will catch our eye? Today, Mujiangquan (public account: mujiangquan) shares the production process of how to process tree stumps into stools, which may be a inspiration for you in furniture creation.
Old tree stumps, grinders, chainsaws, electric planers (or hand planers), pencils, sandpaper, wood wax oil, etc. (To purchase tools, please reply "tools" on the homepage to enter the Carpenter Circle WeChat Mall).
First, cut the dried tree stump into square blocks with an oil saw, and then use a woodworking plane to flatten the sides and the top and bottom of the block. Then use a pencil to design the shape of the tree stump stool on the block and mark the parts that need to be cut off. Then use an oil saw to cut off the excess parts, and then use a sander to make the stool shape. Finally, fill the cracks and gaps with epoxy resin, and then polish the surface and apply wood wax oil.
Step 1:Cutting wood blocksFind a dried tree stump. If the stump is not dried, you can put it outdoors to dry naturally. Put the dried tree stump on the woodworking table, saw the upper and lower ends of the stump, put a 330mm×330mm square paper card on the stump (as shown below), and then use a pencil to draw the size of the stool. Finally, use an oil saw to saw off the four sides to make a rectangular stump of 330mm×330mm square and 455mm high.
Step 2:Make the shapeThis step is to make the twisted shape of the stool. First, place the sawn square stump on its side on the workbench and plane it flat on all sides with an electric planer (or hand-made wood planer). Then use 50mm thick square wood to level the upper and lower ends respectively, and draw the thickness of the stool surface and the ends of the stool legs. Then use a paint can to draw a semicircle on one corner of the stump (as shown in the picture). After the semicircles at the eight corners are drawn, connect them with diagonal straight lines. After the four diagonal lines are drawn, the design line of the twisted shape is formed. Finally, use a pencil to mark the position that needs to be sawed. Place the drawn tree stump diagonally on the workbench and cut off the excess part with an oil saw. Be careful to cut strictly according to the line, do not cut too much, and the difficult-to-cut parts can be polished with a grinder later. Do not force the saw to damage the shape. If you use a hand saw to cut, fix the stump on a vise first, and then cut according to the line.
Step 3:GrindingUse a handheld electric grinder to further polish the shape of the wooden stool. Before turning on the machine, check whether the grinding wheel has cracks, whether the protective cover and all parts are intact. Wear protective glasses to prevent small particles rotating at high speed from flying into your eyes during processing. Then polish the shape according to the design lines. Do not grind off the shape lines at the four corners, and the polished shape should be smooth. The technical difficulty of polishing is not high. The key is to be careful and patient.
Step 4:Resin fillingThere are many cracks and gaps on the dried tree stump, so epoxy resin can be used to fill them. The cracks and gaps filled with epoxy resin are like glass and are indestructible. Pigments can also be added to the resin. The repair method is to first grind the surface of the cracks and gaps flat and clean them. Mix components A and B in a 1:1 ratio and stir evenly, then fill the cracks and gaps.
Step 5:Polishing and oilingUse a sander to smooth the surface of the tree stump filled with epoxy resin. Wear dust glasses and masks when sanding. After sanding, use 120~240# sandpaper to sand along the wood grain until it is smooth and flat. Clean the sand and dust thoroughly, use cotton cloth or a brush to apply a thin layer of wood wax oil with the right color along the wood grain, ventilate and dry, and apply a second layer after the first layer is completely dry.
Step 6:Done!Nowadays, many people like to process tree stumps into tree stools, feeling that this way of life is closer to nature. This twisted shape is generous and elegant, and can attract people's attention. In particular, the treatment method of the cracks and gaps of the tree stump makes the original natural "defects" become a beautiful embellishment on the tree stump stool. Therefore, woodworking culture is also profound. Even an ordinary piece of wood in the hands of a master craftsman is like an artistic transformation. [Carpenter Circle Network: http://www./]
