Chris Angel

Name: Criss Angel

Birthday: December 19, 1967

Original name: Christopher Nicholas Sarantakos

Nationality: American citizen of Greek descent

Born in Long Island, New York, USA.

●The only person in history to win the Magician of the Year award twice

●The only person in the world to simultaneously appear on the covers of both Magic Magazine and GENII Magazine

●The New York Post gave the performance a four-star (5★★★) rating.

●Broken the record held by magic legend Houdini for nearly 80 years twice in a row.

● Chris Angel's Japanese Performance won the highest honor at the 2004 Telly Awards.

●Criss Angel, the god of street magic, is the only person to have won the title of World's Best Magician consecutively from 2001 to 2004. His avant-garde style and unbelievable magic have amazed the world, but he has self-destructive tendencies and an extremely eccentric personality. His self-harm magic is unparalleled, and his illusion magic is unmatched. He is the only magician for whom Hollywood was willing to build a theater, and the only person to have graced the cover of American fashion magazines twice consecutively.

He is a magician among magicians, a musician, an expert in escape acts, and a stunt performer.

His television show, *Criss Angel Mindfreak*, premiered in July 2005, and all three seasons were a resounding success. The first two seasons featured acts such as walking on water, trapeze, magleving above the Luxor Hotel, escaping in front of an audience, cutting himself, and lying on shards of glass under a road roller.

During the filming of the third season, Chris Angel was injured and filming was suspended for three weeks.

Chris Angel, the widely adored hero, wants to transition into a mass media superstar. Angel is the rock star of magic, always appearing in a retro suit, surrounded by beautiful women and children, performing classic tricks—with a penchant for pain, extreme danger, and explicit sex. Angel's magic is always inextricably linked to profit margins, reinvestment, and diversification. You expect to see Tommy Lee, but instead, you get Donald Trump, only with better hair.

However, the idea of a magician transforming into a superstar is simply "a pipe dream," according to Richard Kaufman, editor of the industrial trade magazine *Genii*. In his view, only six magicians have done it, from Houdini to David Blaine, and "Angel will be next."

Next spring, Angel may embark on a three-month Asian tour, projected to earn $3 million. Meanwhile, plans for magic shows, DVDs, brand sponsorships, talk shows, a US tour, and Las Vegas casino performances are all in the works. Angel earns $1.5 million annually, and his assistants dream of surpassing David Copperfield's $57 million annual income. "Television shows provide me with a built-in marketing approach. Without reinvesting money, we can't create more art," Angel says. More art means more money.

Who is Criss Angel, after Cirque du Soleil and Celine Dion, that has such charisma that a Las Vegas hotel is willing to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to build a theater specifically for his performance? This man, once praised by the director of MTV as a powerful figure who has mastered the new trends of magic, is Criss Angel, who just won the 22nd Louis Award and the 25th Telly Award last year.

In 2001, Chris Angel's magic performance at The World Underground Theater in New York not only garnered extensive coverage from the New York Times and caused a sensation in the magic world, but also revolutionized audiences' understanding of magic. The circular stage, positioned in the center of the audience, had no backstage setup to hide any secrets, allowing the audience to enjoy the performance up close from any angle. Audiences exclaimed, "How did he do that?" and even fellow magicians couldn't help but ask, "Why is he able to do that?" In just two years, he performed over 600 shows, all sold out. The New York Post immediately awarded him a four-star rating after the premiere, and New York Magazine even jokingly compared his performance to that of other masters of various magic styles, including stage illusion magician David Copperfield, street supernatural magic pioneer David Bryan, and escape magic legend Harry Houdini, to praise Chris Angel's performance. This was because his performance not only encompassed the essence of these three masters, but his skill and creativity far surpassed theirs.

An unbelievable hallucination? An absolutely real feeling!

Chris Angel's bizarre and unconventional appearance, including his long hair, black eyeshadow, and black nails, is just like his unpredictable and unconventional performances. For example, he completed a ten-story-high upside-down escape show in just 2 minutes and 26 seconds, was suspended in mid-air for more than five hours by eight hooks threaded through his back muscles, and stayed in a water-filled space about the size of a phone booth for 24 hours. Chris, who is not restricted by space, performs impromptu acts on the street that are even more astonishing. He can easily walk onto the exterior wall of a building, disappear into a puddle where children are playing, or have a passerby randomly choose a roadside trash can to cover him up. Ten seconds later, Chris is on the roof of a building waving to the crowd. He can also randomly select passersby, hypnotize them, and make them float in the air. He can also read minds with playing cards. Without any prior arrangements or venue setup, Chris Angel is like a super-powered illusion magician who constantly challenges or creates extremely dangerous skills.

In 2001, when Chris brought all this amazing magic (or you could call it magic) to the Broadway stage, he combined Broadway-style rock magic shows, the authentic feel of street performances, the surreal stage presence of Cirque du Soleil, and a live heavy metal band. This not only challenged the limits of vision and delivered a powerful auditory experience, testing your heart rate and creating an unprecedented new era of illusion magic. From then on, your traditional impressions or definitions of magic had to be redefined. An interweaving of illusion and reality, magic and superpowers.

In October 2005, Chris Angel's incredible illusion magic will unfold before your eyes! A unique stage and supernatural magical performance, paired with a shocking and eerie musical style—is this really just magic? Or… incredible superpowers?! "How did he do that?" is our typical reaction to most magicians, just as "Why did he do that?" is our normal reaction to Chris Angel. He pierces a twenty-five-cent coin through the skin of his arm, then cuts open his arm to retrieve the coin. He puts razor blades in his mouth, as if swallowing them, and then pulls them back with thread. He makes incredible monsters burst out of his chest (a box). Undoubtedly, Chris is a master of creating shock and illusion.

Chris has been described with all sorts of titles, "a postmodern Houdini," "post-apocalyptic chic," but these are clearly just fancy descriptions to illustrate that "he's definitely not just someone who pulls rabbits out of top hats while wearing a tuxedo." With his long, flowing hair, black nail polish, and all-black special costume, Chris looks like a reincarnation of Rob Zombie, the heavy metal rock legend. However, the truth is, Chris isn't far removed from rock music; he's not just the creator, director, and star of the entire illusion show, but he also composes and sets the music for the performance. Although the show is a magic show at the forefront of its time, many of his tricks are derived from rather old themes: card tricks, being cut in half, box escape shows, etc., and then modified. It's as if a performer and props directly stepped out of Cirque du Soleil to adorn his large-scale performance. This terrifying and dangerous modern Houdini may not be for everyone, but if you're looking for a slightly crazy and creepy Hollywood show, it definitely won't disappoint.

Chris Angel—with a Gothic, dark, and melancholic style, and the eeriness of Cirque du Soleil—is a magician, a street performer, a performance artist, a musician, and a dancer—and will be traveling the world with his terrifying and insane creation, "Mind Fantasy." Perhaps Chris's true magic lies in this man who combines New York flair with the makeup of Marilyn Manson, achieving an art form by blending magic and illusion.

Have you ever dreamed of performing magic on television? Not just on some local morning talk show, but a full-hour special watched by millions. It would reinvent "magic" to make it a television program, a goal you've been working towards for over a decade. This is the story of how Chris Angell made his third television special – "Supernatural." In this story, you'll see most of the joy of victory and a small portion of the frustration of failure. You'll learn how important technology is to the production of a successful television special, and you'll also learn a lot about Chris Angell's personal illusion art, the man who performed 600 live shows in Times Square last year and was named "Magician of the Year" by the International Magician's Society in 2001 and 2004.

David Blaine

David Blaine was born on April 4, 1973, in Brooklyn, New York. Influenced by his mother, Blaine became fascinated with magic. Blaine's mother and grandmother were both Gypsies. Blaine is most grateful to his mother because she supported and encouraged him in whatever he wanted to do. Blaine has a tattoo of a tiger by Salvador Dalí, one of the most imaginative modern painters, on his arm. His free-spirited family environment fostered his imagination and adventurous spirit.

I've aspired to be a magician since I was a child.

When Brian was four years old, he witnessed a subway performer's act and began experimenting with card magic. From a young age, Brian saw magic as his lifelong career and attended training courses in Manhattan. Brian was fortunate enough to have opportunities to perform in commercial shows and daytime stage shows. It was during this period that Brian developed the ability to levitate. On the advice of his personal physician, Brian also underwent a comprehensive physical examination. Soon after, Brian moved back to Brooklyn. At this time, his mother was diagnosed with cancer and passed away in 1994 when Brian was only 21 years old. The grief of losing his mother did not dampen Brian's desire to perform magic. To gain fame, Brian began performing magic at celebrity parties, such as those of Mike Tyson, Al Pacino, and David Geffen. Through these connections, Brian befriended famous actors Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio.

 Innovative actions attract audiences

But Bryan wasn't content with that. To further boost his star power, he filmed himself performing magic tricks and sent the videotape to ABC. Perhaps Bryan didn't anticipate the huge response his performance received, and he quickly landed an interview with ABC. Subsequently, Bryan's album, *David Bryan: Street Magician*, was released, becoming a best-selling videotape in 1997. Two years later, *Bryan: The Magician* followed. Bryan became a sought-after guest on various talk shows, and his appearances on television became constant. For a time, Bryan was even rumored to be dating Madonna.

In 1999, Brian Depp put on a truly remarkable performance. To promote his new album, he lay in a transparent coffin filled with water, burying himself alive for a week, losing a full 10.9 kilograms. His act sparked immense public interest. Although Depp emphasized, "My performance was absolutely genuine, and I never used any special effects. My surroundings were real, and the television broadcast never used camera cuts," many have recently presented theories to expose Depp's "trick." However, Depp's reputation remained unaffected, and he still had many enthusiastic supporters. In fact, negative opinions often fuel people's interest in the entire event. But this time, the number of skeptics far outweighed his supporters. Perhaps this is why so many people eagerly anticipate Depp's next astonishing performance.

Jason Latimer

The "Cup and Ball" magic trick is one of the most traditional and oldest magic performances internationally. Over the centuries, through the creations of numerous magicians, it has reached new heights. However, the "Cup and Ball" performance has always been limited to three copper cups and a few balls. Jason Latima, through years of research, transformed the traditional copper cups into transparent glass cups, allowing the audience to watch the balls change shape inside the cups. The audience witnessed the balls suddenly disappear and then reappear from the other side of the cup. Such a transformation was unprecedented. When the performance ended, the audience stood up and applauded him. He won the close-up magic championship at the 2003 FISM International Magic Convention. Jason became only the third magician in history to receive this honor. But for Jason Latima, this was just the beginning; he hoped to achieve even greater success...

Character Introduction

Jason Latimer's performing career began at the young age of nine. By twelve, Jason was already performing professionally for birthday parties and important events. He quickly became one of the most frequent magicians in the city's small entertainment venues. Latimer then continued to study extensively, reading numerous books and watching countless videos, becoming one of the instructors at a renowned academy for young talents, working alongside and guiding young magicians to help each student hone their skills and performance level. At eighteen, he became the youngest performer at Magic Castle, enjoying exclusive dinners and club performances. This perfect performance led Jason to NV Entertainment in Las Vegas, where he delivered stunning performances at the Golden Dog Hotel and casinos.

In January 2003, Jason attended the Siegfried and Roy World Magic Symposium hosted by NV in Las Vegas, which was the largest gathering of magicians he had attended in the United States to date. Following the performance, the Latimer was awarded the prestigious SARMOTI (Siegfried and Roy Masters of the Impossible).

Six months later, he represented the U.S. Brooklyn Nets at the World Magic Championships in the Netherlands, hoping to showcase his originality and versatility across various categories of magic. For the past few years, Jason had been secretly preparing a seemingly ordinary magic trick to amaze the world: replacing the cups in a cup-and-ball trick with transparent wine glasses, elevating the traditional cup and ball performance to a new level. At the end of his performance, the entire audience gave him a standing ovation. On July 26, 2003, he was awarded the "World Magic Grand Prix Champion," marking the third time the United States had received this prestigious magic award.

Just as the number "1" represents the beginning of all things, this card symbolizes the power of the universe in creating all things—a hidden energy at the origin. The "Magician" depicted on the card represents the three major forces governing the spiritual and material realms: departure, creation, and discovery. Furthermore, this card also speaks of the process from nothing to something, containing boundless omnipotent power; and it suggests that overcoming life's difficulties lies in one's own unwavering will and abundant knowledge.

He believes that magic enthusiasts should appreciate the magician's performance like watching a movie, rather than trying to solve the tricks.

He is active in the international magic community and has served as a judge in numerous international magic competitions…

Ong Tat Chi, the "father of Macau magic" hailed as a magic encyclopedia, was a guest on "Lingnan Salon".

Let's explore the ancient art of magic and the joy it brings.

Growth process

1. A 16-year-old construction worker had the idea of breaking free from the nails.

Weng Dazhi, 31, was born into an ordinary family in Xinhui, Guangdong. His father was a middle school music teacher and his mother was a kindergarten teacher. He has an older sister and a younger brother. Weng Dazhi's father was also frail and often needed to take medicine, so the family of five lived a very difficult life.

At the age of seven, Weng Dazhi was in first grade. At that time, people often set up gambling stalls at the market near his house, using three playing cards. People were always cheated, but didn't know how to expose the deception and could only accept their bad luck. Weng Dazhi, always a thoughtful child, would run to watch every day after school. On the seventh day, he finally figured out the stall owner's cheating secret: when revealing the cards with both hands, the stall owner's right hand moved extremely quickly under his left, and in that instant, the cards were switched. Weng Dazhi, being outspoken, immediately exposed the stall owner's despicable trick to the gamblers. The gamblers were so angry they wanted to beat the stall owner up, scaring him into fleeing.

During the Spring Festival when he was 8 years old, Weng Dazhi went to Zhongshan, Guangdong with his parents to visit relatives. At the entrance of a park, he saw an old man performing a magic trick of turning an empty cup into water. Little Dazhi was stunned and thought it was incredible! He immediately begged the old man to teach him the magic trick. The old man said, "[1] Magic tricks can't be taught to just anyone. If you can give me 300 yuan for tuition, I will teach you."

Weng Dazhi kept pestering his parents for money to learn magic, which naturally earned him a scolding. But little Dazhi was not discouraged; he was determined to save up the money to learn magic. After returning home, Weng Dazhi would go to the streets every day after school and on holidays to collect glass bottles, cardboard, and other waste to sell for money. During summer vacation, he would sell popsicles, trying every possible way to earn money.

The following Spring Festival, Weng Dazhi pestered his parents to take him to visit relatives in Zhongshan again. His parents couldn't refuse and had to take him. However, upon arriving in Zhongshan, Weng Dazhi secretly went to the park to find the old magician. Excitedly, he pulled out the only 282.25 yuan he had and timidly said, "Master, this is all the money I have. Please teach me the magic trick of turning an empty cup into water!" The old man was both surprised and moved. He not only taught Weng Dazhi the trick but also returned the 2.25 yuan to him. This magic trick was the only one Weng Dazhi ever formally learned from a master.

Back home, an excited Weng Dazhi couldn't wait to perform his magic trick of turning an empty cup into water for his teachers, classmates, and relatives. He skillfully held an empty cup in his hand, then with a wave of his hand, covered it with a red cloth. With another wave, he removed the cloth, and the empty cup was filled with water. Everyone was captivated by his performance, praising little Dazhi's exceptional intelligence. The adults' praise made little Dazhi feel incredibly proud.

From then on, Weng Dazhi became obsessed with the world of magic. He tried every means to collect all the magic books he could find, and then studied them repeatedly. Because he was too fascinated by magic, Weng Dazhi's grades plummeted. In the first semester of sixth grade, he actually ranked third from the bottom in the whole school, which greatly disappointed his parents, who kept scolding him for not focusing on his studies. At this time, Weng Dazhi's father also fell seriously ill and was hospitalized, and the family had already accumulated a lot of debt. Helpless, Weng Dazhi, as the eldest son in the family, had no choice but to drop out of school and go out to work to help support the family.

And so, 13-year-old Weng Dazhi went to work at a construction site in the city with a group of adults. At first, the foreman refused to take him on, but after Weng Dazhi's persistent pleading and requests for only half the wages, he was finally accepted. His job was to carry concrete. On the first afternoon, his young shoulders burned with pain from the heavy load, but he gritted his teeth and endured until the end of the workday. After get off work, Weng Dazhi couldn't take off his shirt because the chafed skin on his shoulders had glued it to him… Weng Dazhi worked at the construction site for three years. Besides sending most of his wages home to support his parents, he secretly saved some money to buy magic books and magic show videotapes. Those books and videotapes became Weng Dazhi's only source of joy during his arduous working life.

During breaks from work, the quirky Weng Dazhi would often perform magic tricks for his coworkers, such as simple tricks like turning an empty cup into water or playing cards. These brought a lot of joy to his hardworking colleagues. Gradually, some companies around the construction site also became aware of this little magician. On holidays, some companies would invite Weng Dazhi to perform magic shows, allowing him to hone his skills and earn some money, which he naturally enjoyed immensely. At that time, Weng Dazhi only considered magic as a form of entertainment and didn't see it as a lifelong career to pursue.

However, a later accident changed the course of Weng Dazhi's life. One day, Weng Dazhi was carrying a load of concrete up to the third floor when he accidentally slipped and fell from the bamboo and wooden frame. His feet landed right in the middle of a pile of steel bars, his canvas shoes were pierced in several places by the steel bars, and a small nail stuck in the pile of steel bars pierced through his shoes and socks and then deeply penetrated his soles...

This accident made Weng Dazhi determined to leave the dangerous construction site. He also learned a lesson from it: although steel bars are large and hard, they have no penetrating power after passing through a shoe, while a small nail can pierce through a shoe and then a foot. The reason is that the nail has a pointed end. As the saying goes, there are thirty-six professions, and every profession can produce an expert. It's not about the quality of the profession you choose, but as long as you excel in your chosen field, you will become an expert. And since his greatest interest in life is magic, why not strive to become a magician and work hard to be a pointed nail?

Just then, Weng Dazhi heard that the annual World Magic Convention would be held in the United States, and he made a shocking decision: to go to the United States to watch the convention! So, he took out all the nearly 50,000 yuan he had earned over the past three years working on construction sites, and when that wasn't enough, he borrowed another 30,000 yuan from his coworkers. This bold move angered everyone in his family, who all called him a spendthrift, and his parents were so angry that they almost disowned him.

2. The seemingly unconventional little magician is gradually becoming a great talent.

In 1989, 16-year-old Ong Tat Chee traveled alone to the United States to attend a magic convention. He obtained his visa as a magician, and because he didn't speak English, he found a Chinese translator in Chinatown. Upon arriving at the convention, he was told he had to pass an audition to participate. So, in front of many magicians, Ong Tat Chee performed a "fishing with an empty hook" trick—he took a fishing rod, walked to the audience filled with magicians, cast his line, and suddenly a red goldfish appeared on the previously empty rod, eliciting thunderous applause. The president of the Magicians of America went on stage, embraced Ong Tat Chee, and said, "Your magic trick not only passes the audition perfectly, but you also qualify to participate in the competition." Ong Tat Chee was overjoyed.

The magic convention lasted for seven days, with magic lectures during the day and magic performances at night, which Weng Dazhi thoroughly enjoyed. There, he met world-renowned magicians: David Goldberg, Jack MacByborg, Christoph Ibrahim, and Danny Goldberg… Their amazing and difficult performances completely captivated Weng Dazhi. This magic convention broadened his horizons, and he learned many novel magic tricks. Although he spent all his savings and incurred a mountain of debt, he had no regrets.

After returning from the United States, Weng Dazhi, through an introduction, got a job as a doorman carrying luggage for travelers at a large hotel. In the evenings, he would occasionally perform magic tricks at the hotel's nightclub, earning a significantly higher salary. He was also frequently invited to perform magic tricks for other organizations, receiving red envelopes of over 500 yuan each time, which greatly improved his income. One day, a famous department store in the city was opening a branch, and the department store's general manager specially sent someone to invite Weng Dazhi to perform for the opening. Many government officials and social celebrities attended, along with singers, crosstalk masters, and newspaper reporters. Weng Dazhi's performance was a "Guinness World Record for Human Body Dissection." When he and his assistant came on stage, the audience stirred: what kind of magic trick could such a small magician perform? On stage, Weng Dazhi remained calm and composed. He used a knife to slit his assistant's throat, and then used the knife to cut the assistant's body into three pieces. At this moment, the audience fell silent. Weng Dazhi covered his assistant with a red silk cloth, expressed his regret for a while, and then slowly lifted the cloth. Strangely, the blood on the assistant's body had disappeared, his body had returned to normal, his eyes began to move, and he stood up... Weng Dazhi's performance was a success. A thunderous applause resounded throughout the square. This time, the department store gave Weng Dazhi a red envelope of 3,000 yuan. The next day, the city newspaper published an article—"China's Youngest Magician's First Trial"—along with photos of Weng Dazhi performing magic.

During Weng Dazhi's performance at the department store, a girl named He Qian clapped enthusiastically until her hands were red. He Qian was a saleswoman at the department store, and she was deeply captivated by Weng Dazhi's amazing magic tricks. Three days later, when Weng Dazhi was performing a promotional act for a real estate company, He Qian asked a bartender to anonymously deliver a cup of coffee to him. When Weng Dazhi finally uncovered the secret, a romance began.

When they were dating, Weng Dazhi often surprised He Qian with unexpected gifts. Once, while shopping at a large department store, he saw a wealthy overseas Chinese woman with two bodyguards. The woman was adorned with numerous pieces of expensive jewelry, a clear indication of her status. The bodyguards arrogantly told those nearby, "Excuse me, excuse me," which annoyed many people. However, when they reached Weng Dazhi and He Qian, they didn't say that. They noticed that He Qian was also wearing just as many precious pieces of jewelry as their mistress. Surprised, the three bodyguards simultaneously made way for He Qian. When He Qian excitedly walked out of the mall, she discovered that all her jewelry had vanished. It turned out that Weng Dazhi had performed a magic trick.

Gradually, the name of the young magician Weng Dazhi spread far and wide. At the age of 19, his magic show "The Mystery Comes Like This" was broadcast on the provincial television station. In the show, he performed magic tricks and exposed some pseudoscience, such as qigong that involves eating glass, as well as some cheating tricks at the card table.

To master magic and become a professional magician, Weng Dazhi not only performed at various organizations and on television, but also spent his free time traveling the world to perform or observe magic shows. In each country he visited, Weng Dazhi consistently created new magic tricks never before seen by audiences, earning him the admiration of many foreign magicians who called him a magical genius of the East. Although he earned several thousand dollars per performance abroad, the vast majority of his earnings went to travel expenses, and the costs of attending each magic festival were substantial. At the end of the year, he had virtually no money left to save, leading to a barrage of negative comments from relatives and friends who accused him of neglecting his studies. But this did not diminish his determination to pursue magic.

Having dropped out of school at a young age, Ong Tat Chee felt increasingly inadequate in his cultural knowledge as his performances increased. At the age of 20, in addition to learning and performing magic, he resumed his studies at a part-time secondary school, diligently learning English. Two years later, he was finally able to communicate in English. Later, he enrolled in a part-time university program in business administration.

As Weng Dazhi's international influence grew, more and more young people came to him seeking to learn magic, but he politely declined them all. He told them that magic was fine for entertainment, but making a living from it was not a promising career. However, he couldn't resist the persistent requests of some and finally accepted Lin Xiaoming and Cai Jiehui as his apprentices.

Seeing that many people were interested in magic, Weng Dazhi had the idea of selling magic props. Since most magic tricks require props, he figured if he opened a magic prop shop, he could teach people the corresponding magic tricks for the props they bought—a win-win situation, and the business might be quite good. In 1993, Weng Dazhi's magic prop shop finally opened in Guangzhou, and business was surprisingly good. Soon, Weng Dazhi opened three magic prop shops.

In 1993, Weng Dazhi participated in the International Magic Competition held in the United States. This time, his "Christmas Magic" performance won fourth place. Although he missed out on the top three prizes, his international impact was phenomenal, especially considering he was only 22 years old! Numerous media outlets around the world, including almost every newspaper in the United States, provided detailed coverage of Weng Dazhi. This poor boy, ridiculed by his family and friends back home, had finally achieved international fame. Furthermore, he became the first Chinese magician to be internationally recognized as an outstanding artist.

In August 1993, the Chinese Magic Association officially invited Weng Dazhi to lecture Chinese magicians at the annual Chinese Magic Congress. During his travels around the world, Weng Dazhi deeply realized that Chinese magic lagged far behind that of Western countries. The reason, he attributed, lay in the stagnation of Chinese magicians. Because Chinese magicians generally received state salaries, their income was guaranteed regardless of circumstances, and they faced no financial pressure. They rarely studied magic in their spare time, and their performances always carried an air of authority and superiority. Foreign magicians, on the other hand, immersed themselves in magic throughout their lives, and their performances were always accompanied by smiles. Therefore, when lecturing Chinese magicians, Weng Dazhi always emphasized one point: magic performances are about a moment of brilliance; their secret lies in the unseen, and the audience should not be able to see the difficulty of the trick.

Several countries with advanced magic traditions frequently invite Weng Dazhi to perform abroad. To learn from various masters, Weng Dazhi travels the world year-round, becoming one of the Chinese magicians with the most overseas performances. As his fame grows, Weng Dazhi's fees also rise, reaching $5,000 per performance.

1996 was the most impoverished year of Weng Dazhi's life. At the beginning of the year, his frail and sickly father passed away. His father could not forgive his son for his lack of ambition, and many relatives and friends said that his father was angered to death by Weng Dazhi. This made Weng Dazhi feel deeply guilty, and he was immersed in grief and self-blame every day.

Soon after, his girlfriend of eight years left him because he was too poor. This series of blows left Weng Dazhi disheartened and utterly despondent, losing all will to strive. For two months, Weng Dazhi locked himself at home, drowning his sorrows in alcohol, ignoring the advice of relatives and friends. Finally, his two neglected magic prop shops also closed down. Weng Dazhi and a few apprentices were left running the last magic shop on Guangzhou's Industrial Avenue. With no desire to perform, they were almost penniless, and even a cup of coffee or a movie became a luxury.

It wasn't until one day, while visiting a friend's rented apartment, that Weng Dazhi was once again pierced in the foot by a nail. He suddenly remembered the ideals and determination he had after being pierced in the foot by a nail at the construction site. So he rallied and devoted himself to magic even more diligently.

3. A construction worker eventually becomes Asia's number one magician.

In 1997, China was to host an international magic competition in Guilin. To prepare for this competition, Ong Tat-chi devoted himself to research for a year. He finally created a large-scale magic show, "Dream Time Machine," and won third place. This success not only solidified Ong Tat-chi's position in the international magic world but also greatly boosted his confidence!

In November 1999, the quadrennial World Magic Championship was held in Hong Kong, and Ong Tat-Chi participated again. His performance, titled "Oriental Legend," involved him holding an ancient coin, which, in the blink of an eye, conjured hundreds of coins; in another blink, the coin turned into water; and then, nothing at all. This magical act received thunderous applause and unanimous praise from the judges. Ultimately, Ong Tat-Chi won second place at the World Magic Championship. This marked the first time a Chinese magician had achieved such success at the event.

Since then, Ong Tat Chee has continuously created new and amazing magic tricks. His performance style has become increasingly mysterious, meaningful, romantic, beautiful, and technically demanding. He has performed and lectured at numerous international magic events, garnering countless flowers and applause. This young man who came from a construction site has finally transformed into a prominent international magic master in Asia. And he is the youngest one!

After achieving fame and success, Ong Tat-chi not only lectured Chinese magicians annually at magic conventions in China, but also produced magic programs for numerous television stations. He still attends annual magic festivals in many countries with advanced magic, such as the United States, but in a different capacity—he is invited as a guest to lecture their magicians. Only Ong Tat-chi enjoys such an honor in China. Although many theaters abroad have increased his performance fee to $10,000 per show, he has relatively reduced his overseas performances, focusing his main energy on researching new magic tricks and training Chinese magicians. Currently, Ong Tat-chi's magic programs have been broadcast on over 200 television stations worldwide, and every provincial television station in China broadcasts his programs. His instructional magic VCDs are also distributed worldwide and reprinted multiple times. This was the first Chinese-language magic VCD, filling a gap in magic education in China. Previously, Chinese people who wanted to learn magic had no idea where or how to learn it. Now, you can learn magic simply by buying a DVD of Weng Dazhi's works, such as "Weng Dazhi Teaches You Magic," "Chinese Oddities," and "Talking About Magic." Weng Dazhi's name is a well-known name in China's magic network, and many media outlets call him "the teacher of modern Chinese magicians."

In 2001, at an international magic competition held in Hebei, China, Lin Xiaoming, a student who had followed Weng Dazhi for several years, participated and made it to the finals, winning the Golden Lion Special Award and bringing glory to Chinese magic once again. In 2002, at the highest national honor magic competition held in Nanjing, China, Weng Dazhi's student Lin Xiaoming won the silver medal in the stage category, while another student, Cai Jiehui, also made it to the finals and won the silver medal in the close-up magic category.

Weng Dazhi still travels the world year-round, but he spends most of his time traveling rather than performing. He believes a good magician should be full of boundless imagination, able to turn anything around them into a prop; if you can imagine it, you can do it, daring to make the impossible possible. Seeing new things constantly naturally sparks new creative ideas. Now, Weng Dazhi invents nearly 50 new magic tricks every year, then unreservedly teaches them to Chinese magicians, while simultaneously discovering new tricks for himself.

Today, the magic training school that Weng Dazhi built in Ximenkou, Guangzhou, has cultivated generation after generation of magic talents. He now owns 18 magic prop shops in China, and has expanded to the United States, Hong Kong, and Macau. Under Weng Dazhi's leadership, Chinese magic is gradually reaching the world stage.

Since Ong Tat Chee is still unmarried, he receives hundreds of love letters every year, along with flowers and applause. Many girls travel thousands of miles from foreign countries to find him and present him with roses, but Ong Tat Chee is still unable to get over the deep wounds of his first love.

In September 2003, Ong Tat-chi began performing his magic show "The Legend of Illusions and Dreams" (the largest and longest magic show in the world today, hailed by magicians worldwide as a groundbreaking innovation) across China, a project he had meticulously researched for over two years. "The Legend of Illusions and Dreams" lasts two hours and consists of numerous magic tricks divided into three parts: the Illusion section, the Dream section, and the Legend section. The Illusion section alone includes tricks such as the Illusion Magician, Rose and Illusion Cut, Dream Music Stage, and Sunshine and Wine. Ong Tat-chi first performed "The Legend of Illusions and Dreams" in Hong Kong and Macau. During the October Golden Week holiday, he moved to Yingxian Villa in Dongguan, Guangdong. The venue was packed; the 4,000-seat auditorium was squeezed in 5,000 people, with those without seats choosing to stand rather than give up their seats.

Soon, Ong Tat Chi will be touring the world with his "Legend of Magic" show. Ong Tat Chi says he hopes to build his own magic palace in China, complete with a magic restaurant, a magic museum, magic performances, magic training, magic props exhibition and sales... whatever you like magic, you can find it there.

From a construction worker to a world-renowned magician, Ong Tat Chi has a unique perspective on his success: Life's stage is like a magic show. If you fail on stage today and are ridiculed by the audience, then practice hard next time and start over. Misfortune is a test; when life hits rock bottom, it's the beginning of a rebound. One needs the perseverance of a nail, but even more importantly, the courage to stick one's head out. Then, your life will naturally become wonderful.
