Capture Your Stomach: 37 MustTry Foods in San Francisco (Part 2)

Yesterday's 20 must-try dishes wowed Bay Area foodies and San Francisco tourists alike. Today, we're recommending the remaining 17 dishes. From Italian pork fettuccine to grilled octopus to a Papua New Guinean chocolate s'more, keep reading!

21. Vegetarian Paradise

What are brassicas? A little brother of mustard, brassicas are sometimes translated as "ratana." Raw, they have a strong flavor and are often used in salads.

This vegetarian paradise salad also uses brassicas as an ingredient, paired with Italian cheese, avocado, assorted vegetables, and some grains. It is delicious, low-fat and healthy! It is a vegetarian paradise!

22. Italian Pork Fettuccine

I recommend Delfina’s fettuccine, which is naturally delicious and based on a principle: any food that takes time, effort and thought to make deserves respect.

The seemingly ordinary pork wide noodles take two days and five hours to prepare. The fragrant sauce of carrots, onions, celery, garlic, rosemary, sage, white wine, and tomatoes stews the pork shank and short ribs to a perfectly tender and flavorful texture, and the chef's meticulous attention to detail is evident in every bite.

The fresh fettuccine is cooked to perfection, just like our northern noodles, neither too hard nor too soft, but just right, paired with a thick sauce. Take a big bite and lick the sauce on your lips, it’s so satisfying!

Tip: If you don’t like pork, you can also replace this Italian pork pappardelle with duck meat, Duck Sugo with Pappardelle, which is just as sincere and delicious.

23. Grilled Chicken with Bread Salad

Don't underestimate this grilled chicken and bread salad dish; it's a legendary creation in San Francisco's culinary world. Its fame has spread far and wide, and it's been featured in numerous prestigious food magazines, from Food and Wine to Saveur. It's a delicacy worth trying!

The focus of this dish is the roasted chicken, with the bread salad taking a backseat. The free-range chicken is tender and flavorful, cut into large pieces, including whole drumsticks and wings. The meat is marinated with thyme, garlic, and pepper before being roasted, resulting in a fragrant aroma. The bread salad is complemented by raisins and pine nuts for a richer flavor.

24. French Orange Cardamom Butter Shortbread

Bonjour Patisserie—the very name itself evokes the aroma of French pastries. This shop is a contender for the title of "The Bay Area's Favorite Patisserie"! (It goes to show how talented the Bay Area culinary scene is!) Their signature French butter puff pastry (kouign amann) is a must-try. In the pastry world, anything that can be described as "puff pastry" is undoubtedly crafted with meticulous care and attention to detail.

To achieve a crispy finish, the crust must be light and thin enough. It also needs to be baked to a high enough temperature, fragrant but not overcooked. It's soft yet crispy, and flavored with orange and cardamom. One is the "all-match goddess" from the fruit world, and the other is the "rock elf" from the spice world. Together, they create this French orange and cardamom butter puff from the stars. Every bite is a surprise, and it's as delicious as first love.

25. Crispy Duck Salad

Hakkasan has always been known for its exquisite Chinese cuisine. After opening its Bay Area branch, Hakkasan felt considerable pressure from various culinary masters, so it focused more on the research and development of innovative dishes. This crispy duck salad is its masterpiece.

Marinated duck slices are deep-fried to a delicious crisp, while the main salad features tender watercress and spring onions. The garnishes are creatively enhanced with pomegranate and pine nuts, creating a refreshing and flavorful addition. It's worth noting that Hakkasan's New York branch was awarded a Michelin star in 2003.

26. Fried Kale Crisps

This is a must-order snack for almost every Marlowe customer. Five stars! It's said that even those who love French fries will never want them again after trying these kale crisps. I've been wondering when kale crisps will become a street food favorite.

Compared to the starchy, high-calorie French fries, fried kale crisps are both healthy and delicious! A real treat for those who are afraid of obesity! I've been wondering, when will fried kale crisps become as readily available as French fries?

27. Mediterranean Kebabs

Like the vibrant Mediterranean landscape, Greek cuisine, originating from the Mediterranean, has always been known for its fresh, simple cuisine. Large chunks of lamb, richly spiced and marinated, are strung onto skewers and grilled over a fire. Despite the simple and unrefined cooking method, the lamb tastes anything but crude; instead, it's tender, juicy, and richly flavored.

As an aside, while Greek cuisine favors olive oil and cheese, is often grilled, and features generous portions of meat as staples, a Harvard professor, after years of research, concluded that Greek cooking methods are the most scientific and health-promoting. However, this claim has been widely verified.

28. Fried Pork Rind Taco

There are two reasons to recommend this Chicharrons. The first reason is La Palma restaurant itself. I have always felt that the highest praise for a restaurant is that you can order any dish with your eyes closed and it will not disappoint you. La Palma is such a restaurant.

The second reason is Chichiarrons, which are essentially the fried pork rinds we've been eating since we were little! A more advanced way to enjoy them is to chop them up, mix them with guacamole and salsa, wrap them in a taco, and bite into them. It's so crunchy and delicious!

29. Barbecued Pork Buns

Ta-da! The BBQ pork buns everyone in the world will love are here! While there are plenty of places making BBQ pork buns in the Bay Area, I highly recommend this one: Cape of Good Hope Bun Shop! They offer both steamed and baked BBQ pork buns, and both are delicious and worth a try!

The soft crust envelops the sweet and juicy barbecued pork, making it both delicious and filling. Perfect for breakfast, afternoon tea, or even a late-night snack, it's a perfect companion for home and travel. The barbecued pork buns at Cape of Good Hope are freshly made and steamed, ensuring exceptional freshness and a very affordable price. This down-to-earth delicacy is a favorite among Bay Area foodies!

30. Chef's Recommendation

There aren't many Japanese restaurants in the Bay Area that deserve a spot, but IchiSushi Ni Bar is one of them! Ordering an "Omakase" option means the chef will serve up the freshest raw fish of the day. At Ichi Sushi Ni Bar, the omakase menu is sure to live up to your expectations. This sushi restaurant boasts a wide variety of fish, and the chefs are known for their exceptional knife skills!

If you're interested, you can also discuss with the waiter the type and part of each piece of sashimi you eat, and they will answer your questions very patiently. The price is a bit expensive, but in terms of taste, it is worth it!

31. Grilled Octopus Tentacles

The 1760 charcoal-grilled octopus tentacles were slightly burnt, but tasted just the right softness and firmness: the softness came from the plump octopus meat, while the firmness and chewiness came from the fibers of this tentacle-like aquatic creature.

If cooked correctly, octopus tentacles are a truly delicious delicacy. This dish is a bit small, so it's a good starter or snack!

32. Papua New Guinea Chocolate Marshmallow Cookies

Dandelion Chocolate's chocolate is truly amazing! If you're a chocolate lover, this shop is a must-see! They offer a wide variety of chocolates, chocolate-inspired desserts, and drinks, all beautifully presented, ensuring a feast for both your eyes and your palate. It's incredible to think that Dandelion, a chocolate-focused shop, sources every ingredient directly from the farm and meticulously prepares it by their chefs to achieve the ultimate in flavor!

Many things in the store are worth trying, including chocolate biscuits and a few drinks, but the most recommended one is the chocolate biscuit from Papua New Guinea. Needless to say, this biscuit has a rich chocolate flavor, a crisp texture, and a sweet jam filling, which is very popular with girls! The reason for this name is that the raw materials of this biscuit are produced in Papua New Guinea. How sincere!

33. Mexican Chicken

Mole is a Mexican word that literally translates to "thick chili sauce." However, mole itself isn't just chili sauce. Making mole is a complex, time-consuming, and labor-intensive process, with a long list of ingredients required.

There's a joke that even a Michelin-starred chef would be overwhelmed and exhausted trying to make a mole. However, San Jalisco, a restaurant well-versed in Mexican cuisine, makes a delicious Chicken Mole. Served with black beans and rice, it's incredibly authentic!

34. Maple Bacon Sandwich

This restaurant is well-known for its BBQ, with long lines forming during dinner time. Only a few seasoned foodies know that 4505's breakfast sandwiches are also exceptional.

I recommend the Maple Bacon Sausage Breakfast Sandwich. It's delicious just by the name! The maple-smoked bacon is slightly sweet, paired with a fried egg and seasonal vegetables. The bread is buttered and toasted to perfection. Bacon and fried eggs are a golden combination that never goes wrong!

Sometimes, making a delicious dish does not necessarily require complicated skills. As long as you use the simplest ingredients and simplify it, it may seem ordinary but the taste is not mediocre. Being able to bring a sense of solid happiness to diners on a bright morning is also a realm for a chef!

35. Cuttlefish Noodles

Cuttlefish noodles are a delicacy that is difficult to eat with proper manners! But even if your mouth is covered in black, you will still enjoy it and indulge in this rare delicacy!

A16's chef is a true master at making squid pasta. Simmered squid is seasoned with minced garlic, lemon, cilantro, and Italian pepper, then topped with thick noodles and garlicky clams. The filling is generous and flavorful, making it a must-try for squid pasta lovers!

[Additional Information] Tonnarelli pasta is a thicker, firmer version of the larger pasta family. It's soft yet chewy, similar to the equally thicker udon noodles. These little tonnelli noodles absorb flavors very well, making them perfect for squid pasta!

36. Fried Chicken and Waffles

The fried chicken and beer dish, made famous by Cheon Song-yi, gave us a solid taste of traditional Korean fried chicken. American-style fried chicken is no less delicious than Korean fried chicken, with crispy skin and juicy chicken. After getting used to fried chicken and beer, try fried chicken and waffles.

Hard Knox Café is one of the few Southern American restaurants in the Bay Area, specializing in soul food, with several traditional snacks being exceptionally well-made. However, the fried chicken and waffles are a must-try for discerning foodies. The fried chicken is crispy, the waffles are fluffy, and the texture and flavor are incredibly complex!

37. Sea Salt Caramel Ice Cream

Whether adding sea salt to drinks or ice cream, it will instantly enhance the taste and style. That touch of high-quality salt is really intoxicating.

There's always a long line at Bi-Rite, but don't worry, it moves quickly. If you're a dessert lover, it's worth waiting in line for the sea salt caramel ice cream.

Tip: Some people find the sea salt caramel ice cream a bit too sweet, so I recommend pairing it with a refreshing ice cream (two scoops per cup). Recommended flavors include vanilla crunch and Earl Grey.
