Can baking soda clean mattresses? Get practical cleaning tips

The bed is a crucial piece of furniture in our homes, spending a third of our days reclining on it. The mattress is its most crucial component. But did you know? A mattress that hasn't been cleaned in three years can harbor over a billion bacteria! Yet, many people neglect to properly care for their mattresses after purchase. Some even fail to remove the outer plastic wrapping, claiming it protects the fabric. This maintenance approach is highly undesirable.

How should we properly care for and use this mattress? Today, I will show you some practical ways to care for your mattress.

Method 1: Use a vacuum cleaner to clean the surface of the mattress

Due to the material of the mattress, you cannot use liquid detergents or chemical cleaning products to clean the mattress. Instead, you need to use a vacuum cleaner to clean it. First, use a vacuum cleaner to clean the dirt on the surface of the mattress.

Note: Clean close to the surface of the mattress; pay special attention to the concave areas; a lot of dirt will be absorbed there.

Just vacuum it every time you change your sheets.

Method 2: Use baking soda

Sprinkle baking soda evenly on the mattress surface and let it sit for about half an hour to eliminate the odor on the mattress. Then use a vacuum cleaner to clean it. If the mattress odor is really strong, you can add some essential oils to the baking soda.

Method 3: Press-type mattress cleaning

If there are stains on the mattress, you can first use a damp towel to press and clean it. Do not use circular motions to clean, as this may cause the stain to spread.

You can make your own cleaning agent by mixing hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and water. After spraying, let it sit for a few minutes, then gently scrub with a toothbrush. It will be clean in no time! The effect is very good.

After wiping the mattress, use a hair dryer to dry it.

Method 4: Exercise the mattress and maintain it

During the first year of using a new mattress, you should flip it over every three months to ensure that the springs are evenly stressed. After that, you can flip it about every six months.

Some tips for maintaining your mattress

1. Keep it clean

If the weather is good, you should dry the mattress in the sun more often. If the mattress is stained, you can use toilet paper or cloth to absorb the moisture. Do not wash it directly with water or detergent. Also, avoid lying on the mattress right after taking a shower or sweating.

2. Don’t often sit at the corner or edge of the bed

The four corners of a mattress are the most vulnerable. Sitting on the edge for extended periods can prematurely damage the edge springs. The quality of a bed significantly impacts the quality of our sleep and our ability to rest. If sleep quality deteriorates, you'll lack the energy to do anything the next day. Whether for yourself or your family, it's crucial to take good care of your mattress!
