But why are there not many such cabinets on the market? There are many domestic furniture brands now, but few of them make such cabinets. If you want to buy one, you may only be able to go to IKEA and buy a low cabinet made of board or pine wood.

The reason is not difficult to understand. This kind of short cabinet with doors is fine. You can make some changes to the doors to make you feel that it is valuable. If it does not have doors, ordinary people will think that the cabinet is very simple, with only a few grids. Why can a wooden cabinet be sold for thousands of yuan? But in fact, in the production process, although this kind of cabinet does not use much materials, it does not reduce the process at all. In this era when labor is the main cost, the price cannot be too low. As a result, both producers and buyers feel that it is not cost-effective. Simply, no one makes this.

Therefore, this kind of low cabinet has always been on our ideal list, but we have not made it yet. The reason is that the simpler the thing, the harder it is to make. It is not difficult to simply make a square low cabinet, but the difficulty lies in making this product technically sophisticated and colorful, and making it look simple, but it is actually not simple.

Until we met Peter Hvidt. He is also a Danish designer (1916-1986), and his mature works appeared in the 1950s-1970s, which was the era when MCM furniture reached its peak and design masters were shining. In terms of fame, Peter Hvidt cannot be compared with Wagner and Finnjur. Therefore, in the past, when MCM furniture was mentioned, few people directly mentioned his name. His works have only been discovered in recent years to be in line with the value of the current era and are very popular among contemporary people. In the vintage furniture market, few works of Peter Hvidt have been passed down. Even when we visited stores in Copenhagen, we rarely encountered furniture designed by him at that time. In the current international furniture auction market, his furniture is very popular, comparable to design masters such as Wagner and Finnjur. This also leads to the fact that in China, if you can see his vintage furniture, any simple low cabinet will start at 25,000.

Peter Hvidt's furniture is also a member of the Nordic MCM style furniture, but it is very different from other designers in terms of detail processing:

1. Cylindrical legs. Peter Hvidt’s furniture does not have the tapered legs of ordinary MCM furniture, but rather simple and straightforward cylindrical legs. This feature allows people to recognize his furniture at a glance among many Scandinavian MCM cabinets of the time.

JALO rolling door cabinet + doorless cabinet can be combined into a high side cabinet. The thickness of the wood board and the overall structural proportion designed by Peter Hvdit are very delicate.

Like the MCM style furniture that Jialuo Life has always launched, this time we reproduced Peter Hvidt's furniture in its original form. There are four models in total, the first one is a doorless square cabinet, the second one is a wooden sliding door square cabinet, and the third one is a rolling door square cabinet. Because Peter Hvidt's cabinets are a large family that can be matched at will, we only selected a few models this time and did not provide too many options. The wooden sliding door and rolling door square cabinets can be combined with the doorless square cabinet without legs to form a tall cabinet.

The fourth one is a famous design by Peter Hvidt, a long side cabinet with rolling shutter doors. The height of this side cabinet reaches 870mm, which is not suitable for TV cabinets, but it is a very good-looking side cabinet with a unique temperament. It has complex craftsmanship and is very popular in the vintage furniture circle.

JALO rolling door long side cabinet, this cabinet is a famous work of Peter Hvdit. If you can find a vintage cabinet in China, it will cost 20,000 to 30,000 yuan each, and it is hard to find one.

We have written about the craftsmanship in our previous articles on selling MCM furniture. The materials we use are FAS-grade cherry wood imported from North America + E0-grade European pine board imported from Germany + cherry veneer. We have also written about why we don’t use solid wood, not because of the price (the doorless square cabinets this time will cost 100~200 yuan more than what we make now, only 5~7% more expensive), but for stability.

Actually, we originally made a doorless square cabinet made entirely of cherry wood, but within more than a month of sending it from the Zhejiang factory to the Beijing office for taking photos, a crack appeared on the bottom. After much consideration, we decided to continue using the previous solid wood + European pine board + veneer process. For those friends who are obsessed with solid wood, I advise you to let go of your inner demons (it is not to say that solid wood will definitely crack, including the Nordic MCM furniture from the 1950s and 1960s, which is also made of solid wood, but that kind of solid wood must be left in the factory for a few years to fully balance the dryness and wetness before it can be used. At present, in China, it is almost certain that no one can be so luxurious as to give you solid wood for a few years before using it. If there is, they will sell it to you at a sky-high price)

In addition, the surface treatment process we use is not the currently popular wood wax oil, but nitro lacquer. When MCM furniture was popular, it was all paint, not wood wax oil. Decades have passed, and the texture of the furniture at that time is still the same, which is closely related to the protection of the paint. Therefore, we did not simply use wood wax oil for treatment, but used nitro lacquer, which is currently the closest to the effect of the paint at that time in China (the country now advocates water-based paint, the production process of water-based paint is environmentally friendly but the texture is very ordinary).

The low cabinet this time is a little different from the previous furniture in terms of craftsmanship. In order to completely reproduce Peter Hvdit's furniture, we used dovetail joints that we had never used before. The external joints of the cabinet are connected with dovetail joints, which can only be done with solid wood. Therefore, a new combination of materials was used this time. The top plate, side plate, and bottom plate of the cabinet are all made of solid wood wide edges to make exquisite and beautiful dovetail joints. Only the center part uses E0 grade imported European pine board. This ensures that the cabinet does not deform and retains the characteristics of the dovetail joint. Even if the dovetail joint is slightly deformed, it will not affect the shape and use function of the cabinet itself.

It also needs to have nice dovetail joints, and large areas of the board must be veneered with imported European pine board to ensure stability. The result of wanting everything is that the workmanship is super complicated and delicate. The dovetail joints must be made of solid wood, that is, the edges of the cabinet surface are all made of very wide solid wood edging, and then combined with the board with veneer, which is very troublesome.

The interior of the doorless square cabinet is divided into three columns of space, and shelves can be placed freely in each column. We have equipped each doorless square cabinet with five shelves. If additional shelves are needed, they can be purchased separately.

The most difficult and beautiful part of the rolling door square cabinet is the rolling door. There are two main difficulties. One is that the process is complicated and consumes manpower and time costs. The wooden strips of the rolling door need to be made and polished by workers one by one, and then glued to the lining cloth one by one. We have experimented with several kinds of lining cloth alone. Those that are too soft are easy to break, those that are too smooth have poor adhesion, and those that are too sparse cannot withstand long-term use. The ones with slightly harder texture and slightly larger pores are the most suitable, which can withstand repeated pushing and pulling, and can fully absorb glue to enhance adhesion ; the other is that the matching degree between the rolling door and the track groove is extremely high. First of all, the cabinet body must be relatively stable to ensure that the track groove does not deform seriously. Secondly, the curvature of the curved route of the track groove at the corners has been repeatedly tested to achieve smoothness. The corners should not be too loose to make the rolling door push and pull feel light, nor should they be too dry to cause jamming. We repeatedly adjusted to try to find a more subtle sense of balance.

Rolling door cabinets are very rare in the market because of the high labor costs and high prices, making them difficult to sell. But there is a truth in this world that beautiful things are expensive.

The long side cabinet with rolling shutter door is very classic and elegant, and is one of Peter Hvidt's most famous works. Although it has many of the same design elements as the previous short square cabinets, it has an overwhelming victory in terms of aura.

The leg structure is different from the detachable bottom frame and leg structure of other square cabinets. The legs of the rolling door side cabinet are integrated with the cabinet body, but the shape is more beautiful and complex.
