A glimpse of European potted flowers: thoughts about Phalaenopsis and Anthurium

Anthur is one of the world's largest producers of anthurium seedlings. This famous company is well-known in the domestic flower industry and must be visited when going to the Netherlands.

From design to construction, the entire Anzu team spent four years to build the greenhouse. The greenhouse is 12 meters high and divided into two floors. The first floor is the production operation area, which is generally not open to customers. It has an area of 120,000 square meters. The second floor is about 20,000 square meters, which is mainly used to place some plants that require high light or to display products. There are about 100 employees here.

We were received by Mr. Sander, the head of Kunming Anzu. Mr. Sander has been in China for many years and is considered an expert on China. He used a unique humorous way to start with the history of greenhouse development, and shared with us the production equipment, corporate philosophy, anthurium and phalaenopsis products, and the differences between the two countries' markets.

It is understood that Anzu's breeding work is mainly carried out in the Netherlands. In the past, new varieties would be promoted in the Netherlands first, and Chinese varieties would lag behind a little. However, now some varieties have been synchronized between China and the Netherlands.

Next to the conference room, we saw a green wall of anthurium . This green wall is not only for aesthetics. It is said that it is used to test the formaldehyde absorption of anthurium. Anzu's anthurium has not only improved its ornamental value, but also has more developments in its functions.

Anzu also uses carbon dioxide to supplement carbon fertilizer. The outdoor carbon dioxide concentration is generally 400PPM, but the production room is maintained at 900-1100PPM. The company can adjust the carbon dioxide concentration according to the needs of crops. Generally, the concentration is higher during the day than at night.

Mr. Sander mentioned that the carbon dioxide is provided by chemical companies such as petrochemicals or power plants in Rotterdam, which are large emitters of carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide is directly delivered to each flower production company through the pipelines built by the government, which not only solves the problem of environmental pollution but also improves the efficiency of the company. Large infrastructure projects such as building pipelines are impossible for a single company to do. He suggested that the Chinese government can also consider these large infrastructure projects in supporting flower companies.

 Phalaenopsis

♫. ♪~♬..♩

The biggest difference between Phalaenopsis in Europe and Phalaenopsis in China is that the direction of the flowers is not uniform. Therefore, they do not have the concept of group pots. If you want to group several Phalaenopsis together, you can just use a self-watering pot.

The Dutch market consumes 180 million Phalaenopsis orchids every year, of which Anthura accounts for 30% of the market share. Europeans have a great love for Phalaenopsis orchids, and it is said that one out of every two people will buy Phalaenopsis orchids.

European Phalaenopsis orchids like to be placed on windowsills, so the leaves must be ornamental.

The following is a Phalaenopsis orchid seedling, the roots are already very strong ♪(^∇^*)

Phalaenopsis orchids are all placed in guide leaf cups in the Anzu display area. The bottom of the cup is left empty on both sides. The substrate is mainly bark and coconut bran, with a ratio of about 1:1. This is determined by the cultivation model. Most European companies use tidal irrigation, so it is more appropriate to use bark and coconut bran to grow Phalaenopsis orchids.

Domestic growers have also begun to use guide leaf cups, which can improve the problems of leaves shading each other, poor air circulation, and inconvenience of manual watering, while also increasing the yield per unit area.

When breeding new varieties in the Netherlands for the European market, if a variety has an 80% chance of having two stems and a 20% chance of having a single stem, then the variety will be eliminated. Anthura's Phalaenopsis breeding is already researching the direction of three or even four stems in preparation for the future.

They found that if they wanted to have multiple stems, they needed to be very precise in temperature control, because multiple stems are very sensitive to temperature. However, in fact, many Chinese growers do not have such sophisticated equipment, so Anzu tried to sell medium-flowered and small-medium-flowered stemmed seedlings (double stems) directly to growers this year.

Anzu is also considering dwarfing the Phalaenopsis so that it can be placed not only on the windowsill but also on the dining table.

This is a Phalaenopsis orchid that I saw in another company. A single Phalaenopsis orchid is also very interesting. The whole plant is only 30 cm long, but the flower diameter is 12 cm, which is suitable for placing on the office desk.

These are Phalaenopsis orchids sold directly from the gardening center. Some are woven into a heart shape, and some are woven into an oval shape, so you can just carry them away.
