"8 Don'ts" for dining tables. After reading this guide to avoid pitfalls, you will never be cheated by unscrupulous merchants again
The dining table is a place where family members gather together and is also one of the most frequently used pieces of furniture.
For a long time, its importance has been more or less ignored by everyone, and the dining table industry is a very complicated industry with many pitfalls.
Today we will introduce you to the "8 Don'ts" to avoid pitfalls at the dining table, and explain how to choose. I believe that after reading this, you will not only have a better idea, but also unscrupulous merchants will not be able to cheat you.
1. Do not choose less than 80 cm wide

65cm wide dining table
If the dining table is lower than 80 cm, when people sit on either side, they won't be able to reach the dishes with their hands, and the dishes can only be arranged in a line as shown in the picture, making it difficult to pick up the dishes... There are many inconveniences.
The right size
But the wider the better is not the case: if it is a rectangular dining table, the correct size can refer to the following standards:
Generally, a dining table within 1.8 meters is 80 cm wide, which is a coordinated size;
1.8 meters, can be 80 cm or 85 cm. As shown in the picture, the dining table is 1.8 meters x 85 cm, which is considered wide.

1.8m x 0.85m dining table
For dining tables over 2 meters in height, consider adding 90 cm in width.
There are almost no pitfalls when it comes to the size of the dining table. It mainly depends on the choice of the homeowner. Many homeowners feel that their dining room space is limited and specifically look for a narrow dining table.
But in fact, there is no need to do so. You can start with the dining chair to solve this problem.

The space occupied by dining chairs is ranked as follows: chairs with armrests > chairs without armrests > benches.
If there is a wall on one side of the dining table, the distance between the dining table and the wall should be 1.2 meters for dining chairs with armrests, 90 centimeters for dining chairs without armrests, and 60 centimeters for long benches. These are all comfortable sizes, so instead of saving 10 centimeters on the dining table, it is better to start with the dining chairs, which can save dozens of centimeters in width.
2. Don’t choose a table with huge legs
This is also a matter of common sense. If the table legs are too big, the number of people who can sit at the table will inevitably decrease sharply.
But unfortunately, many people are deceived by its appearance, making this kind of dining table with Roman concave and convex column legs a popular model.

Can you believe that the 1.8-meter dining table shown in the picture can only accommodate 4 people. If you want to add a stool, it will inevitably make the people sitting very uncomfortable because their legs will be against the table legs.
The side is also not suitable for placing a dining chair because it cannot be folded in, not to mention a baby chair.
This kind of dining table is supposed to be a niche model, especially for families with a large house and just two people.
What should the correct dining table legs look like?
For ordinary families, considering practicality and utilization of the dining table, it is better to choose ordinary table legs as shown in the picture. Although it is a bit monotonous, it is also simple, durable and practical.

1.4m dining table
As you can see in the picture, the 1.4-meter dining table can easily accommodate 4 people, and if you want, you can add two more seats.
3. Don’t choose the outward eight legs
If the dining table is against the wall, there is another factor to consider when choosing the table legs - the skirting. It is not recommended to choose the table legs that are perpendicular to the table top. Because the skirting is 2 cm thick, the table will not be able to lean against the wall.

Of course, don't even mention the outward-facing legs of a dining table. The distance from the wall will be greater, things will fall down easily, and the corners will be inconvenient to clean.

Furthermore, even if you are not leaning against the wall, standing with your legs turned outward is not an ideal choice because it is easier to trip someone.
What should a dining table against a wall look like?
The table legs should be smaller than the table top and should be placed away from the skirting.

Then stick a few anti-collision particles as shown in the picture on the side of the table against the wall, and you can let it lean against the wall without worrying about bumping into the wall.

In addition to preventing collisions, anti-collision rubber particles can also play a role in sound absorption. They can be used on toilet lids, drawers, door handles, etc.
4. Do not choose a rock slab dining table without a pallet
Some time ago, a piece of news went viral: "The son was naughty, and the father smashed the table with one palm to scare the child!" The root of the problem was not that the child's father's internal strength was too strong, but that there was something wrong with the slate dining table.

To be honest, in terms of the performance of stone slabs, they are really suitable for making dining tables. They have a high-end feel, are not afraid of water, heat, or oil, and are easy to maintain.
But there is a disadvantage, which is that it is brittle. If there is no support plate at the bottom and the table legs are directly under the rock slab, it will inevitably cause the rock slab dining table to break.

The reality is that many Sumitomo's rock slab dining tables have broken, and they complain that the rock slab dining tables are too rubbish. But in fact, they just ran into unscrupulous merchants.
The rock slab dining table must check whether there is a pallet
Therefore, when we choose a rock slab dining table, we must pay attention to whether there is a support plate at the bottom, and it is best to have a full support. The rock slab dining table in the news is only half-supported, and it will still break.

Of course, with a bottom support, there will be no problem in coping with daily use, but it does not mean that you can sit back and relax. You need to pay attention to avoid being hit by heavy blunt objects.
5. Don’t choose a frosted dining table
In addition, when choosing a dining table, there are many materials and you will be faced with a choice: to choose a flat, glossy surface, or a frosted, uneven surface?

Frosted and uneven surfaces are often more beautiful, but it is recommended not to choose them. No matter it is made of rock board, glass, acrylic, stone, or resin, it will be very difficult to wipe off afterwards, and it will even often produce an oily smell because it is not wiped clean.
It is recommended to choose a glossy dining table

If you don’t like the glossy texture, just consider solid wood. After painting, although it is glossy, the texture of solid wood can still be retained, and there will be no reflective effect.

If you have already made the mistake, you still have a second chance. You can buy the TPU leather table mat as shown in the picture.

It is easy to maintain, fits comfortably, and has good texture. It comes in solid colors and patterned colors. It can also reduce the noise of tableware hitting the table top. It can also be customized for non-standard sized and arc-shaped dining tables.
Remember to choose a TPU leather table mat, which is more environmentally friendly. PVC leather has a strong odor and is unsafe. New ones also have a two-color design on the front and back, allowing you to switch between different moods.
6. Do not choose multi-board splicing
Solid wood dining tables are popular, but solid wood itself is expensive, and many people love to be cheap, which leads to a very deep market for solid wood dining tables. If I were to explain the ins and outs of it, I'm afraid it would take a long article of 10,000 words, and I can't finish it. I will only talk about the one I see people fall into the trap of the most - splicing board.

The price of the whole board is very high, basically more than 10,000 yuan.

Patchwork is a good choice, but please note that there are 2-piece, 4-piece, 5-piece, 6-piece... and even 12-piece. Let's take a look at the 12-piece table top... Although it is black walnut, the color is messy and there is no texture at all.

There are even worse ones where the stitching cannot even be straightened.
How to choose splicing board?
So when choosing solid wood table tops, don’t be too cheap. If your budget is sufficient, use whole boards. If not, use double-jointed boards. The price will be half that of the old ones, and you can get it done with 5,000 yuan.

In addition, here are a few more ways to choose:
Appearance: Just remember that the ones with less scabs, black lines and cracks are better;
Thickness: It should be 4cm or more wide to get the true meaning of a solid wood dining table;
Material: The mainstream grade ranking on the market is black walnut > cherry > oak > ash; but it is not absolute. A good ash table top will be much more expensive than a poor black walnut one.

Finally, when buying a solid wood dining table, you need to have the right mindset. Solid wood will definitely crack, and it cannot withstand heat or bumps. But solid wood is easy to process. Cracks, bumps, and burns can be repaired with a little effort and it can become a new table. The picture above shows the cracks repaired with butterfly tenons, and it can also be filled with resin. There are many ways to do this, and it is no problem to repair it and use it for a hundred years.
7. Don’t choose a desktop with gaps
Food gets into the gaps on the dining table, making it difficult to clean.

So for things like this, where the design specifically leaves a gap, it’s better not to go for it.
In addition, it is understandable that the transformable dining table needs to leave gaps due to its functionality.

However, it is not recommended, although theoretically it can be expanded to accommodate more people when there are many people.
But my family has used the transformable dining table for more than 10 years. According to my experience, it has been unfolded no less than 20 times, and the utilization rate is not high.
8. Don’t choose the small one
Regarding dining tables, the general perception is that if you can choose a big one, try not to choose a small one.
My new home is also a small apartment, so I went against everyone's advice and chose a 1.8-meter one. When I actually used it, the experience was really great!

I work, eat, open packages, and even have simple meetings in this place, and the experience is very satisfying.
Hahaha, this dining table in my house has appeared in the picture above. If you are a Sumitomo who loves to find details, why not find out which picture it is?
